STEM

Week 4

Preps learnt about what humans need. They had to draw pictures to show the human needs of air, food, water, shelter and sleep.

1/2s looked at key external features for present-day and prehistoric animals. They looked at different pictures and worked with a partner to discuss their key features.

Using items – flour, a pencil, grass seeds, wooden block, an eraser, a jug of water – placed around the room, grade 3/4 had to determine if these were living, non-living, once-living or product of a living thing.

5/6s researched about different tree roots adaptations and sketched these.

Week 5

Preps explored the needs of animals.

1/2s continued their focus on key external features. They had to match the dinosaur to its feature, while also finding the purpose of that key feature.

3/4s looked at the characteristics of living things, using a Venn diagram to compare an animal with a plant.

5/6s researched about different bird beak adaptations.

On Thursday 27th March, our school was fortunate to have Sam and Leisha from Questacon come and present two Science shows. The first session was for Prep-2 and the second session was for grades 3-6. Students were engaged as they posed questions, made a guess and then tested. A further opportunity for the Hamilton community is available this Saturday, March 1st at the Hamilton showgrounds, where Questacon are holding a pop-up science centre between 10am-4pm. Bookings are essential for this free event. Here is the link to be able to make a booking:

In The Artroom

The last two weeks in the Artroom have been spent creating art using Colour Theory.

We’ve focused on Primary, Secondary and Tertiary colours, the Colour Wheel and Warm and Cool colours. Lots and lots of painting!

Photos of  artwork is placed on our Facebook page.

This week the grade 5 & 6s commenced their large artwork for the UV room for our Arts Festival night. They are creating an A2 piece of artwork based on Keith Haring’s style of art, and painting with UV fluorescent paints. These will ‘glow’ in the dark with our special UV lights.

Our Arts Festival night is on at the end of this term – Thursday, 27th March, starting at 6pm. We will have lots of fun and exciting activities for everyone to participate in as well as some awesome raffle prizes! We have special guest artists this year – Jesse Shannahan and Belinda Rogers to facilitate some very specific art activities.  WindaMara will also be facilitating an Indigenous art activity, sharing their knowledge and skills with the whole school community with their amazing resources.

It's going to be an AWESOME night and we hope to see you all there!

Art club is on a Tuesday lunchtime and certain grades have been allocated their own timeslot.

Art extension is during Wednesday lunchtime, where certain students will be chosen to participate in extension programs, developing their art skills even further. This again will be run in grade levels.

Artist of the week awards go to
