Debating Club

Vermont Secondary College

Wednesday 19th of March marked Round One of the 2025 Debaters Association Victoria (DAV) Competition! This year we have 37 members (so far) spread across seven teams, which is a great increase from last year. We went incredibly well on the night, with four victories, and three extremely close second places with notable mentions.

Our two Year Eleven teams were the first wins during the first half of the night: Team 1 – Avery F, Claire R (Best Speaker from the two sides) and Juliet O, and Team 2 – James P, Archie H (Best Speaker from the two sides. All six of our speakers did incredibly well. Our Year 10s, Hiruki F, Alice S and Jitho J did very well with notable mentions on their rebuttals (which are very hard to improvise and make up on the spot).

The second block saw success in all four teams. Although our Year 12s (Anders F, Kav B, Liam B) may not have won overall, they were commended for their strong knowledge of the topic and skills in delivering their parts. We congratulate Anders who was chosen as the Best Speaker of the two sides.

Our three Year 9 teams also saw great success. We had two victories: Team 2 – Yulia T (Best Speaker of the two sides), Sumeyye K and Sukriti V, and Team 3 – Zoya K, Charlotte Ruan and Cooper H (chosen as the Best Speaker of the two sides, and it was his first ever debate as a sub-in!!!). Team 1 (Jovia J – nominated Best Speaker from the two sides, Neha P and Mithra S V were commended for their persuasive skills and quality of arguments and debates.

We look forward to continuing to work with our seven wonderful teams and are so excited for Round 2 in April! Thanks, as well to all the other team members who weren’t speaking in Round 1 that came along to support their teammates! Such great collegiality and sportsmanship!
