This week's focus

Be an Active Listener

This week, our positive behaviour for learning focus is being an active listener.

Students have been learning how listening to and following instructions helps their learning and keeps everyone safe.

Why is it important?

Safe

  • Understanding Others: When you listen actively, you understand what others are saying and feeling. This helps prevent misunderstandings that could lead to conflicts or hurt feelings.
  • Creating a Safe Space: Active listening makes others feel valued and heard. When people feel safe to express their thoughts and feelings, it creates a supportive environment where everyone can share openly.

Respectful

  • Showing Respect: Active listening shows that you respect the speaker. It tells them that their thoughts and opinions matter to you.
  • Building Trust: When you listen carefully, it builds trust between you and your classmates. They will feel comfortable sharing more with you in the future because they know you value their input.

Engaged

  • Better Understanding: Being an active listener helps you understand the information being shared, whether it’s during a lesson or a conversation. This can improve your learning and help you remember important details.
  • Enhancing Communication: Active listening encourages open communication. When you listen well, you can respond thoughtfully, which helps keep conversations going and makes discussions more meaningful.
  • Participation: Engaging as an active listener allows you to participate more effectively in class discussions, group work, and activities. It shows that you are interested and involved in what is happening around you.
