Science – Living Things and Their Environments (Stage 2)

This term in Science, students are learning about how living things depend on energy and materials to survive. They are developing their understanding of how living and non-living elements work together within environments, and how these connections support life.

Students are exploring the relationships between habitats, ecosystems and environments, and are learning to observe and describe living and non-living things within different habitats. They are building an understanding of how plants and animals rely on each other, including how energy is transferred through food chains and how these connections support survival.

We have already investigated food chains and life cycles, and students have begun to make links between how living things grow, change and depend on one another. As the unit continues, students will further explore how different species interact and how changes in an environment can impact these relationships.

An important part of our learning is recognising how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ practices support the health and sustainability of habitats. Students are learning about the deep connection to Country and how traditional knowledge helps care for and maintain balanced ecosystems.
