Chess

Later in the term, we will be going to Tumut to compete in the local Junior Chess League School Competition. We will be sending two teams of four students. Practice has already started, and there has been a lot of positive interest, which is fantastic.
At the moment, we are practising weekly, but we will increase that to multiple times per week. Just as with every skill, the more you practice, the better you become. Please continue to foster this interest at home.
Of course, practising good habits is preferred. Encourage your child to move pieces to the middle of the board and avoid the edges. A famous chess saying is “Knights on the rim are dim”, which means, if possible, move those pieces to the centre of the board. In the same way, central pawns need to be moved before the more lateral pieces. If you can remind students of this as you play, it will strengthen their game considerably.
