There’s a Prawn in Parliament House
This book is available for student loan in our library!
Ever wondered what really goes on inside Parliament House when the cameras are off? There’s a Prawn in Parliament House written by Annabel Crabb reveals all as Crabb shows us how politicians eat, live, argue and cope with the pressure of their jobs.
This book is a great way for our Beaumaris Secondary students to engage with Australian politics without feeling the weight of reading a textbook. Funny and insightful, the book is especially useful for civics or media studies, proving that politics isn’t just about serious speeches. The book is full of odd moments and strong personalities and the occasional prawn where you least expect it.
The first chapter takes readers on a guided tour of Parliament House, including a detailed map and fun section titles like “Under the House” and “Invading Insects.” It reveals hidden underground areas and even talks about bogong moths that pass through the building, making the information interesting and easy to follow instead of boring. Along the way, students learn about how the building works, what happens in the House of Representatives, and the role of Hansard reporters.
Other chapters explore important topics like Australia’s history, the Constitution, how voting works, the jobs of Ministers and government departments, the media, and how laws are made.
The Last Thirteen
It is great to see some of our Beaumaris Secondary students enjoying The Last Thirteen series by James Phelan – a mix of action movie and mystery puzzle.
The Thirteen book series introduces Sam, a regular teenager whose life changes overnight when he discovers his nightmares are glimpses of the future. Soon he learns he’s one of the ‘Dreamers’ – a group of thirteen teens around the world who can predict the end of the world through their dreams.
From there, the story becomes a global race against time. Sam and his friends travel across countries, solve clues, escape enemies, and try to stop a powerful force threatening humanity.
These are short yet fast-paced books ideal for grades 7-10 and perfect for students building reading stamina.
