Deputy Principal Teaching and Learning Report

Over Term 1, Mr Brown (Middle School Studies Coordinator) and Ms Dekker (Senior Studies Coordinator) have been emphasising to students how important organisation and revision are as keys to success for students. Below are some of their hot tips for students. Students, especially Year 12 students, should spend some of their holidays getting ready for Term 2 and revising the content of Term 1.

Try the Cornell Note‑Taking System

The Cornell method helps you organise information so it’s easier to understand and revise later. Divide your page into three sections:

  • Notes section: the largest space for key ideas, diagrams, and explanations during class
  • Cue column: a narrow margin for questions, keywords, or prompts you add afterwards
  • Summary: a short paragraph at the bottom explaining the main idea in your own words

This system encourages you to think about what you’ve learned rather than just copying it down.

Use Cue Cards to Test Yourself

Cue cards (or flashcards) are a powerful tool for active recall—the process of pulling information out of your memory.

  • Put a question, term, or concept on one side
  • Write the answer or explanation on the other
  • Shuffle them, test yourself, and separate the ones you need to practise more

They’re especially useful for definitions, formulas, quotes, and key events.

Space Out Your Practice

One of the most effective study habits is spaced practice—revising information several times over days or weeks instead of cramming the night before.

  • Short, regular revision sessions help your brain store information more deeply
  • Returning to a topic after a break strengthens memory
  • You’ll remember more and feel less stressed during assessment periods

Even 10–15 minutes of spaced revision a few times a week can make a big difference.

By organising your notes well and using smart study strategies, you set yourself up for success. Start small, stay consistent, and you’ll see your confidence grow throughout the term.
