Touch Typing at Home: A Guide for Parents

Helping your child practise touch typing at home is one of the most practical things you can do to support their learning. Just 10–15 minutes a few times a week can make a significant difference over time.

Why it matters

When children can type without looking at the keyboard, they can focus on their ideas rather than hunting for letters. This makes schoolwork easier, faster, and less frustrating, from writing stories to completing digital tasks in class.

Tips for home practice

  • Little and often works best: short, regular sessions are more effective than one long sitting
  • Make it fun by framing it as a game rather than a chore
  • Celebrate progress in accuracy and speed, not just one or the other
  • Encourage your child to resist the urge to look down at the keys, even if it feels slow at first

Free Websites to Try at Home:

For younger children (approx. Ages 7–10)

  • Dance Mat Typing — bbc.co.uk/cbbc/quizzes/dance-mat-typing A BBC favourite with colourful animated animals guiding kids through each key. Gentle, encouraging, and perfect for beginners.
  • Typing.com — typing.com Free lessons that start from scratch and build gradually. Your child can create a free account to track their progress over time.

For slightly older or more confident typists

  • Nitro Type — nitrotype.com  A car racing game where typing speed and accuracy controls how fast your car goes. Kids love the competitive element and it barely feels like practice!
  • TypingClub — typingclub.com Well-structured lessons with stars and medals to earn along the way. A great option if your child responds well to goals and rewards.
  • Keybr — keybr.com Adapts to your child's weak spots and focuses practice where it's needed most. Slightly simpler in design but very effective.

Even just a few sessions a week at home can complement what students are doing in class and help build the kind of confident, automatic typing that will serve them well throughout their schooling and beyond.
