Literacy/Numeracy over the holidays

Literacy And Numeracy For The Holidays

Families can turn everyday moments at home into fun literacy adventures during the holidays. Reading together doesn’t have to mean sitting still with a book! Try creating a “family storytelling night” where each person adds a sentence to a silly story, or act out favourite books using dress-ups and props from around the house. Cooking is another great opportunity. Children can read recipes, follow instructions, and even write their own menu for a pretend café. Simple activities like writing shopping lists, keeping a holiday journal, or creating handmade cards for friends and relatives help children see that reading and writing are part of real life.  It can be creative and enjoyable too!

Numeracy can be just as playful and hands-on using things families already have. Board games, card games, or even a deck of cards can build number recognition, counting, and strategy skills. In the kitchen, measuring ingredients introduces fractions and volume, while kitchen timers help children understand time. Around the house, children can sort and count toys, compare sizes, or build structures with blocks to explore shapes and patterns. Even planning a movie night or a day trip can involve budgeting, counting money, or working out schedules. This shows kids that maths is everywhere and can be both useful and fun!
