Principal's Report

Celebrating 140 Years of St Joseph's College
The story of the four founding nuns - Mother Benedict Moore, Mother Thomas Healy, Mother Vincent Brennan and Mother Borgia Hayden - is extremely significant to St Joseph’s. Their tenacity, commitment and determination to establish a Catholic school in Echuca is a key part of why we are here today. Their arrival in 1886 marked the beginning of our story, and while we have been celebrating the past, we also look to today, tomorrow and beyond.
Our Foundation Day celebrations with students on Friday were perhaps among the best. The liturgy was moving and student-driven, and the afternoon activities were both fun-filled and, quite literally, belly-filling, with an abundance of food and shared enjoyment.
On Saturday, we opened the College for tours, and it was wonderful to welcome so many people through our doors – sharing stories, reconnecting and witnessing the many changes that have taken place over time.
The Gala Dinner on Saturday evening was a highlight of the weekend – a beautiful experience of connection, reconnection and nostalgia. It was a time to share stories of the heart; stories of St Joseph’s. The welcoming spirit of our College continues to permeate the lives of individuals, families and the wider Echuca Moama community.
We were also blessed to have a number of Brigidine Sisters join us over the weekend. Their presence elevated the joy of our celebrations, and we are deeply grateful for their ongoing connection to our College.
A particularly meaningful moment was the presentation of the Keys to the College, recognising individuals who have made a significant contribution to St Joseph’s, or whose lives have been shaped by their connection to the College through leadership, service and impact within the wider community.
The following individuals were recognised:
- Mother Borgia Hayden, Mother Benedict Moore, Mother Vincent Brennan and Mother Thomas Healy – the founders of our school, who arrived from Ireland in 1886
- Sr Catherine Kelly – former Principal and advocate for First Nations peoples
- Sr Cecilia Merrigan – our last Brigidine Sister in Echuca, and someone with whom many in our community share a deep connection
- Hector McKenzie – a significant benefactor to the College
- Dale Ryan – known for his relational approach and care for students throughout his time at the College
- Father Chris Riley – supporter and advocate for vulnerable young people
- Rosemary Copeland – former Principal and now Co-Chair of the Kildare Ministries Trustees
- Geraldine Ryan (Ged) – exemplary VCE teacher with a long and dedicated history of service
- Lin Hamence – outstanding student advocate, generous with her time and care
Margaret Kennedy – well-known Drama and Theatre teacher, respected for her high expectations of students
The evening also held deep significance as it marked the final official function attended by Sr Cecilia Merrigan.
Her presence and contribution to our College have been profound, and it was a privilege to acknowledge and celebrate this moment with her.
As we move toward Easter, I wish all families a restful time – a chance to pause, catch your breath and gently prepare for the term ahead.
May the risen Christ bring you joy today and blessings tomorrow.
God Bless.
