Extra-Curricular at MAG

Thank you to all students, staff, and families for a brilliant start to the school year in the Music Department. It has been wonderful to see such strong involvement across our co-curricular and extra-curricular programs, with many ensembles and performances already showcasing the talent and dedication of our students.
Term 2 is shaping up to be another exciting and busy term, with consistent production rehearsals alongside key events including ANZAC Day, Mother’s Day, the Young Performers Concert, and MAG Rocks the American. We can’t wait to see what our students achieve next!
Opening of the Moama Police Station
Our Senior Singers proudly represented MAG at the official opening of the Moama Police Station, performing the National Anthem in front of distinguished guests, including Yasmin Catley MP (Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism) and NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon. Students were also honoured with commemorative coins presented by Detective Chief Inspector Jy Brown. A fantastic achievement — well done!
Year 7 Open Evening
Drumline A, led by Kev Kiely, delivered an outstanding opening performance for the Year 7 Open Evening, setting the tone for an evening of showcasing all that our school has to offer for future Year 7 students.
Our Folk Ensemble, under the direction of Erin Heycox, also did a superb job entertaining all touring groups of students and families throughout the night.
Jr Singers
Our Jr Singers have made an exceptional start to the year, performing This is Amazing Grace at the K–12 Easter Service and Hot Chocolate at the Easter Bonnet Parade. You are sounding fantastic under the guidance of Ms Fiona Gibbs—well done!
Student Recognition
A special congratulations to Jasmin Costin (Year 7) for her ongoing accompaniment of the Australian National Anthem at school assemblies this term. This is a significant responsibility, and Jasmin has carried it out with confidence and excellence.
Well done to Miles Allitt (Year 8) for his impressive performance at the recent Secondary Assembly. His rendition of Jungle by Tash Sultana showcased outstanding looping skills, timing, tone, and musicality.
Update - Harwyn Rocking the Nation is Cancelled for 2026
Unfortunately, Harwyn have cancelled this year's Rocking the Nation Battle of the Bands competition, with plans to recommence next Year. I along with many others were excited to submit videos for this, but we will revisit this opportunity should Harwyn decide to run the event in 2027.
Extra-Curricular Instrumental Tuition – Now Open for 2026
MAG offers a comprehensive Extra-Curricular Instrumental Music Program supported by specialist tutors across percussion, brass, woodwind, strings, guitar, piano, drums, bass, voice and rock bands.
The beginning of the year is an ideal time to commence instrumental lessons. Places are limited, and some instruments may have waiting lists. Students already enrolled in the 2025 program do not need to reapply.
If you have any questions regarding Extra or Co-Curricular Music at MAG, please contact Mr Mike Hearn, Head of Student Experience – Extra-Curricular Music Program (K–12) at mhearn@moamagrammar.nsw.edu.au
We look forward to another inspiring and music-filled year at MAG in 2026.
Kind regards,
Michael Hearn
