Class Celebrations

Prep

Our Prep students celebrated an incredible milestone this week - their 100th day of school! The day was filled with fun as students made 100 Day crowns and glasses, took part in special activities and proudly received certificates to celebrate how far they've come. The excitement was as big as ever, just with a few more grey hairs, wrinkles and walking sticks to match the occasion! We are so proud of every single student for all of their hard work, growth and resilience over the past 100 days. It has been a joy to watch them learn, make new friendships and grow in confidence each day. Congratulations, Preps, on reaching 100 days of learning. We can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings!

Year 1

This week our Year 1 students began learning their Production dance and the excitement was contagious! They listened carefully to instructions, practised each dance move with enthusiasm and showed fantastic teamwork as they learnt the choreography. We are so proud of their positive attitude and can't wait to see their confidence and skills grow as they prepare to shine in our end of term performance.

Year 2

Our Year 2 scientists have had a fantastic start to our new Science unit on sound! This week, we investigated how sounds can be loud or quiet and discovered that sounds are made by vibrations.

Using rulers balanced on the edge of a table, students experimented by gently and firmly flicking the ruler to observe how the strength of the vibration affected the volume of the sound. They also explored how changing the length of the ruler hanging over the table changed the sound that was produced. It was wonderful to hear students using scientific vocabulary such as vibration, loud, quiet, and volume to explain their observations.

To finish the lesson, students put their investigation skills into action by working with a partner to record their experiment using the iPad's slow-motion camera. Watching the ruler vibrate in slow motion helped students clearly see what happens when sound is produced! They then reviewed their recordings and uploaded their own videos to Seesaw to share their learning.

We are looking forward to continuing our exploration of sound over the coming weeks as we discover more about how sounds are made and how they travel.

Year 3

Our Year 3 students have been very excited to learn their new AR range and target. They completed their STAR Reading Assessment to obtain their range and had a discussion with their teacher to decide on their target together. Our students are now excited to read new books in their range and to gain a strong understanding of the books they read to strive for 100% in their quizzes. We wish our Year 3 students all the best with reaching their targets this term. 

Year 4

As an introduction to our science unit 'Material World' the Year 4 students had a fantastic time participating in Fizz Kids science investigations. Through a range of exciting, hands-on experiments, students explored chemical science concepts by making predictions, testing their ideas, and observing the outcomes. We are looking forward to exploring chemical science more this term!

Year 5

Our Year 5 students should be incredibly proud of the way they represented themselves during Athletics Day. The sun was shining and the students smiled from ear to ear as they took on each event. One of the highlights was seeing students enthusiastically cheer for their peers and genuinely celebrate the success of others, especially those who received ribbons. The respect and support the students showed one another throughout the day was what the Year 5 teachers were most excited to see. Beyond the competition, the day gave students a chance to strengthen friendships, work together and enjoy being part of the wider SMPS community.

Year 6

This week in Science, students began using micro:bit devices to learn to code. A micro:bit is a tiny computer. Students learned to tell it what to do by writing instructions in code, which provides a sequence of intructions, as shown in the picture below. The micro:bit can show words on its LED display output. Students experimented with a series of codes and demonstrated great resilience in learning this new skill. We are excited to build our knowledge as we work towards our end of term project!
