A note from Mr Jackson

Shaping a Culture Where Everyone Can Learn: High Expectations
At Rosanna Primary School, we continue to maintain high expectations for both students and staff. Recent parent and student feedback confirms that this is one of our key strengths as a school community. Our teachers are engaging in ongoing professional learning to further refine their practice, ensuring that students are encouraged to think deeply, engage actively, and give their best effort in all learning experiences.
In classrooms, staff are using a range of strategies to support rich learning. These include cold calling (to ensure everyone is thinking and ready to contribute), turn and talk opportunities (to build confidence as well as hear and share different perspectives), and hinge questions (which help teachers check for understanding and adjust their teaching in real time). Regular checks for understanding, through the use of whiteboards and targeted questioning, support students to reflect on their learning and build new understandings. These diverse strategies strengthen inclusion and access for all students in the classroom.

ANZAC Day Ceremony (Saturday 25 April)
A special thanks to our captains for representing our community at the ANZAC Day ceremony at the Watsonia RSL on ANZAC Day. It was an important community event to remember the great cost of war, recognise the great sacrifices that have been made and pledge again to do everything we can to live peacefully.
3-6 Cross Country Event (Tuesday 28 April)
On Tuesday, students from Years 3–6 laced up their runners and took on the annual endurance cross country at the Rosanna Parklands. It was a fantastic day filled with determination and teamwork, as students pushed themselves to do their very best. There were many wonderful examples of persistence and resilience, and every participant should be proud of their efforts.
This event would not have been possible without the organisational talents of Kelli Zealley, along with the support of our families and volunteers, whose encouragement helped make the day such a success. While our Prep, Year 1, and Year 2 students did not participate in this event, they can look forward to their own unique sports day later in the year, where they will have the opportunity to shine.
Design Idea for New Play Space Take Shape (Monday 27 April)
Thanks to all who have shared their ideas for the new creative play space for the oval embankment. Parents met on Monday afternoon and wandered over the site and initial thoughts and scope of works were discussed. As the experts in playground design, students too have been sharing their ideas in classroom discussions and surveys. We are hopeful that the works can start in the upcoming holidays so that the space can be enjoyed later in the year!
Friends of Rosanna Primary School (FORPS) Meeting (Wednesday 29 April)
The Friends of Rosanna Primary School (FORPS) met on Wednesday night, some online and others in Chandler Hall, to discuss their upcoming fundraising events. We are deeply grateful for this dedicated group of parents, who support the school in many seen and unseen ways. Their ongoing commitment has a significant positive impact on the culture and climate of our school.
Most importantly, the work of FORPS highlights the collaborative responsibility we share as a community in education. The partnership between families, staff, and the wider community continues to enrich the learning experiences and opportunities available to all children at Rosanna Primary School.
Upcoming Events
Birding Club Special Guest (Wednesday 6 May)
Next Wednesday at 1:30pm students are invited to meet an extra ordinary guest! While they do not have feathers they are an expert in the area of ornithology! Michael is a prominent Australian ornithologist, ecologist, and conservation biologist, not to be confused with the former Australian cricket captain of the same name. He is an Emeritus Professor at La Trobe University in Melbourne, where he has worked since 1992, specialising in the ecology and conservation of Australian birds. He has elected a Fellow of BirdLife Australia (2023) and awarded the D.L. Serventy Medal (2007) for his significant impact on ornithology. Michael has heard about our group and eager to share his experience with our newest birders as they go for a walk to the parklands. Make sure your child books in through the office.
Respect: A Key Value for Us All (Thursday 7 May)
This term we’re celebrating the school value of Respect. On our upcoming Respect Day, students, staff and families are invited to wear shades of green to mark the occasion and reflect on the behaviours that show respect in our community. Classroom activities will explicitly teach and reinforce respectful words and actions so our whole school can continue to foster a positive, inclusive learning environment. If you are an Op Shop visitor, start keeping an eye out for GREEN!
FORPS Mother’s Day and Special Others (Friday 7 May)
Make sure that you are keeping an eye on this important opportunity for students to make a special purchase to express their gratitude to someone special in their lives. Students will visit the special FORPS stall in the Chandler Hall and peruse a range of special items for purchase.
Further Proposed Industrial Action (Thursday morning 28 May) TBC
As noted last term, the Victorian Government Schools Agreement (an industrial agreement that sets the pay, working conditions, and rules for staff working in Victorian government schools) is presently being negotiated between the government and staff of government schools. The Australian Education Union have foreshadowed further industrial action on the morning only of Thursday 28 May. I look forward to informing parents and our wider community about the impact that such action might have on Rosanna Primary School as soon as it is available.
