School travel brochures and posters |
Updated school travel brochures are now available on our website at transportnsw.info/resources-school-staff under ‘Downloadable resources’.
Schools within the Opal network may also wish to make use of the School Opal card posters to remind students of the need to tap on and tap off. Information for parents/students is attached as a PDF should you wish to include this in your school newsletter. |
Information for parents and students |
School Travel Passes Students who require a School Opal card or travel pass but have not yet applied need to apply or update their details as soon as possible.
In the Opal network, students should travel with a Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.
New Student Opal cards (including new Term Bus Passes) will be sent to the student’s nominated postal address within two weeks of their application being approved.
Students living in rural and regional areas will receive their travel pass from their nominated transport operator. It may be issued via their school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some rural and regional operators do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.
Terms of Use Students using School Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line with the Opal terms of use.
This includes travel within the approved times between 6.30am and 7.00pm from Monday to Friday on school days only. Students must use their child/youth Opal for any travel outside these times.
All students are required to comply with the Student code of conduct. The code of conduct aims to ensure the safety and well-being of school children and other passengers. It is important that parents ensure their child is aware of this, as failure to comply with the code of conduct can result in a suspension from travel. |
Public transport changes coming – plan ahead
Transport for NSW is making adjustments to the public transport network to connect the new Sydney Metro City & Southwest with Sydney’s trains and buses.
Some changes are already in place including the North and Northwest bus changes on 4 August and Sydney Metro from Chatswood to Sydenham which opened on 19 August.
Transport is preparing to make permanent adjustments on the train and the regional outer metropolitan bus network from 20 October 2024.
The changes will support the final conversion of the T3 Bankstown Line between Sydenham and Bankstown to Metro operations and respond to the introduction of Metro services from Chatswood to Sydenham.
We are communicating the upcoming changes to your school so you can share this information with parents, students and staff, and would appreciate you distributing this via your channels.
This change will occur during the NSW Higher School Certificate and may also align with other important dates in the school calendar. We encourage students to familiarise themselves with what this may mean for travel to and from school before the start of Term 4 by visiting transportnsw.info
When the train timetable changes, some of your students’ usual connections may also change. The Transport for NSW Trip Planner will be updated before the changes take effect.
We encourage you to remind your school community to plan ahead at https://transportnsw.info/trip before travelling and allow extra travel time.
