What's happening in Year 4/5/6 space?

𖥧 Term 3 𖥧

(hello, welcome)

Term 4 is off to a wonderful start! The past two weeks have been packed with new learning, a heartwarming Grandparents and Special Friends Day, and plenty of activities.

Learners in the 4/5/6 space took some time to reflect on their Term 4 so far:

River: “Wonder projects are something I am looking forward to.”

Seb: “We're organising fun things, so I'm excited for the rest of the term.”

Lewis: “Happy.”

They're really looking forward to what's ahead, just as I am! ♡

Literacy

In our Word Study sessions, we have been exploring the structure of words, focusing on how prefixes, suffixes, and base words come together to create meaning.

Recently, we investigated the prefix dis- (meaning “not,” “apart,” or “away”) and connected it to various base words. This led us to study the base word rupt (meaning “to break”). Investigating words this way, is deepening our understanding of how words are built and improving our spelling and vocabulary skills.

We are also learning to identify subjective (opinions, feelings, thoughts) and objective (facts, information) language, a skill that helps us build stronger arguments when writing to persuade. This practice enables us to recognise the power of language choice in shaping opinions and viewpoints.

This week, we collaborated to identify the subjective and objectives parts of a sentence and applied our understanding to crafting more complex sentences of our own that express our opinion, with support from a fact.

Numeracy

We’ve jumped into fractions, and our learners have tackled this sometimes challenging topic with a great attitude! They’re now able to identify, shade, and place fractions on a number line, and are starting to explore mixed numbers and fractions bigger than one.

What has really stood out for the learners is seeing how connected everything is—turns out, a lot of what they already know from multiplication and division is helping make sense of fractions!

Wonder Projects

Over the past two weeks, our 4/5/6 learners have drawn on skills from investigations, such as problem-solving, creativity and the ability to be self directed learners to create their own unique Wonder Projects.

Each project focuses on a personal interest, sparking exciting ideas and discoveries that inspire a lasting love of learning, foster curiosity, and promote independence and critical thinking skills.

Here are some of the incredible "wonderings" that will guide learners through their projects!
