Middle Learning News

Hi All,

The buzz was high in our space last Friday, as we welcomed so many loved ones for our Grandparent’s Day. A shout out to Jane, Ruby and Hunter for their fabulous reading during our Mass. As well as, Maison, Luke, Connor and Arielle for your participation in a special job. It was a memorable occasion welcoming our loved ones, allowing them to experience firsthand why we love our school.

Thank you all for making this event so special!

"Birth to Bloom: Discovering Nature’s Web."

This week, we launched our inquiry for the term: Birth to Bloom: Discovering Nature’s Web. Students are encouraged to become self-directed learners by choosing an area of focus within this topic for further research. They’ve been inspired to ask questions, some examples were;

  • Why do male guinea pigs care for their babies?
  • How can I create a great garden for insects?
  • Why do people hunt whales?
  • Why do we need frogs?

This type of wondering and questioning empower our students to explore their interests and shape their research.

During our reading and writing tasks, students have been focusing on nonfiction texts. They’ve read various books and shared insights with their peers. As part of their learning, students are developing note-taking skills to capture main ideas. They’re then using these notes to construct their own explanations in written form.

Mathematics

In mathematics this fortnight, we’ve focused on fractions. Students explored them as parts of a whole, such as halves, thirds and quarters. They are discovering that fractions are always less than one and that there are many fractions that lie between two whole numbers on a number line. Students also created their own fractions and described their creations. They were introduced to the concepts of numerator and denominator.

The circles All Around Us

As we explore relationships as part of our religion this fortnight students creatively responded to the focus text, The Circles Around Us. They were asked to create the circles representing the relationships in their lives.
