Aurora makes the Southern Metro Regional Finals in Shot Put.

 

Murrumbeena Primary School would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Aurora F who this week finished 4th at the Southern Metro Regional Athletics in Shot Put.

This year marked Aurora’s first time being selected for the Murrumbeena athletics team and representing the school at the District, Divisional and Regional Athletics competitions. 

We would also like to congratulate our MPS students who competed at the District and Divisional levels. 

 

MPS athletes selected were: Kai B (200m, hurdles), Charlotte B (1500m), Maeve B (Relay), Harry B (800 & 1500m), Viera CA (Long Jump, High Jump, Relay), Alena G (Discus & Triple Jump), Jess H (800 & 1500m), Sophie H (Triple Jump), James R (Hurdles), Will S (800m), Ella S (800m), Marlo W (Relay), Lily Z (Relay), Aurora F (Shot Put).

We thought we’d take this opportunity to write this article to help students (and parents) understand how the selection process works for each stage of the interschool Athletics competition. 

 

Stage 1- School level competition: MPS Athletics Carnival held on 1st of August this year

  • There are 9 events with four track events and five field events
  • The top place getter in each event (eg. Shot put- furthest distance) qualifies for the next stage. 

Stage 2: Bentleigh DISTRICT Athletics Carnival held 5th of September

  • The MPS Athletics team compete against 6 other schools in our District in the 9 events (plus relays)
  • Only the top 2 competitors per age group and gender in each event is selected for the Bentleigh District Athletics Team to go to the next stage which is the Beachside Division Athletics Carnival.
  • The MPS team finished third with 14 Murrumbeena athletes making the Bentleigh Team.

Stage 3: Beachside DIVISION Athletics Carnival held 15th October

  • Only the top 2 competitors per age group and gender in each event is selected for the Beachside Division athletics team to go to the next stage of competition.
  • Aurora came second at the Beachside Carnival and was the only Murrumbeena student to be selected for the Beachside athletics team to compete at regionals.

Stage 4: Southern Metro REGIONAL Athletics Carnival held 21st October

  • The Southern Metro region of Melbourne brings athletes from 7 different divisions each year to compete.
  • Again, only the top 2 competitors per age group and gender in each event is selected for the Southern Metro Athletics Team to compete in the next stage of the competition.
  • Aurora placed 4th with a throw of 7.96 metres (Personal Best).

Stage 5: Victorian STATEWIDE Athletics Carnival.

 

As mentioned, only the top 2 competitors (per age group and gender) in each event, progress to the Statewide competition as part of the ‘School Sports Victoria ‘Team Vic’ Track and Field Squad. 

We are proud of the students who represented our school and progressed through each of the stages of the Athletics competition.
