Year 1 Bulletin

Writing
Learning Intention:
We are learning to write a long, detailed sentence using the 5Ws.
Learning Experience Overview:
In writing, the grade ones have been writing recounts about our September School Holidays. Students were then asked to select one of their sentences recounting their holidays and select one that they could extend. Before students extended their sentences, modelling demonstrated how a sentence could be extended by including the 5Ws - Who, What, When, Where and Why.
Whole:
Our session began with a whole class discussion about the 5Ws - Who, What, When, Where and Why, as a class, we discussed examples of each. We then watched Possum Magic and talked about how authors make their writing interesting by adding detail. We focus on the language in 23 seconds in the video.
A sentence was then selected from the detailed planning that was modelled in the first lesson and was used in shared writing to complete the worksheet.
Prompts:
- What are our 5ws?
- What is something that you did on your holidays that you could write about?
- Select a sentence from your planning from our first lesson.
Small:
Students used their planning from our first session and chose one sentence to stretch. Using the template, they all worked to stretch their sentences to make them more exciting and detailed.
Whole:
Share & Reflect:
As class, we discussed how using the 5Ws can make our writing more exciting and then discussed how we could further stretch our writing in future sessions by including adjectives and adverbs.
Lastly, students took turns sharing their stretchy sentences with a partner to finish the session.
How you might like to continue learning at home:
- After school, you can ask your child about their day at school.
- You may get them to recount a special event or holiday.
- You can support your child in writing a journal.
