Into the Woods

Students at St Anne’s College Kialla took to the stage recently in their annual school production, heading ‘Into the Woods’ this year.

A selection of talented students from Years 5-12 made up the cast which featured an array of popular fairy tale characters including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and more.

Students also made up members of the crew which included assisting with the sound, lighting and changing the set throughout the show.

The production is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s ground-breaking, Tony Award-winning musical.

Into the Woods JR. featured all the favourite characters in a lyrically rich retelling of classic Brothers Grimm fables.

The musical centres on a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse, and wind up changed forever.

Students performed across four magical nights on October 15-18, 2024 in the Black Box at St Anne’s College Kialla.

Musical Director Melissa Kemp said she was pleased to present Into the Woods as it was one of the first musicals she had ever been involved in during her own time at school.

“It is such a beautiful show with some fabulous characters, which have been brought to life by our talented performers,” she said.

“Our students have worked tirelessly on their characters as well as supported others throughout the rehearsal process.

“I am incredibly grateful to the students for their commitment and passion, both on stage and off, as well as the many staff who have contributed to help bring our show to life. The performance came together thanks to the most incredible, supportive, passionate, and talented group of students and staff.

“I am so proud of each and every one of them.”

St Anne’s College Kialla Principal Anthony Butts said he was incredibly delighted to view the production and was impressed with the talented students’ performance.

“It was a magical display of our students and their skills, from performing arts right through to assisting with the backstage and additional elements that make up a school production such as sounding and lighting.

“A huge congratulations to the staff and students who have been involved in putting this production together.

“Things such as productions can only take place due to a true commitment to ensuring the best possible learning outcomes for our students.

“We know that the production brought an incredible amount of joy to the students and staff as well as the audience members in attendance across the four nights.”

Into the Woods JR. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorised performance materials are also supplied by MTI. www.mtishows.com

A message from Musical Director Mel Kemp.....

Our production of Into the Woods Jnr is now a wrap, and what a success it was!

Over four nights, our talented students brought to life the many fabulous characters we usually read about.

As per most fairy tales, the story had a happy ending...

Little Red Riding Hood and her Grandma were saved from the Big Bad Wolf.

Jack and his mother were able to afford food and did not need to sell their beloved Milky White.

Cinderella and Rapunzel fell in love with their princes.

The Baker and his wife broke the curse and started their family.

Like all things, our show could not have come together without the support from many different people.

I would like to thank all of our parents, families and staff for all of their support throughout the year.

But most of all, to our superstar students both on stage and off. You are all amazing! Thank you!
