SSP Trials for WHC Mainstream Students

We are inviting any mainstream students in Year 7-10, including students from within the Aspiring Athlete program, to trial for our Specialist Sports Program.

Our four pillar sports – Basketball, Netball, Soccer and AFL will be hosting trials in June, during class time – so that any prospective incoming student can be assessed against their peers.

Please note the following factors are all considered for trial outcomes;

  • Positions available within the program at any given year level (please note positions are limited, if available at all).

  • Sport specific athletic skill and ability

  • Attendance (90% at WHC)

  • Effort, behaviour and attitude in all areas of the College Community

Please see the attached flyer for dates and registration details. If students do not register, they are unable to trial.

  • Monday 2nd June: AFL and Soccer
  • Monday 9th June: Basketball and Netball

Drawstring Bags and SSP

We are requesting that all student-athletes continue to bring their drawstring bags to SSP for all of time tabled sessions. No WHC backpacks should enter into the green building – ever! Back packs are to be stored in student lockers. Drawstring bags and boot / shoe bags are permitted for training / in the green building. Please remind your child of this process.

SSP - Competition and Team Selection Friendly Reminder

It is an exciting time for our program with over 600 students across the four pillar sports: AFL, Basketball, Netball and Soccer. However, this also creates complexities around team selection for tournaments and competitions. It is simply not possible for all student-athletes to be selected.

Please understand that although student-athletes are a part of the SSP, this does not guarantee automatic entry to any WHC interschool or representative team. Head coaches are responsible for team selection and many factors contribute to this process, including; skill, ability, team dynamics, effort, behaviour and attendance across the entire College.

We know that non-selection can be difficult for parent-carers, but we thank you for your understanding and support of our program and all student-athletes, whilst we move in to a heavy phase of competition over the next three terms.

If you or your child has any concerns about selection or non-selection, we would encourage all of our student-athletes to have direct conversations with their coaches regarding feedback for improvement.

We thank you for your continued support. We love that your child is a part of our program, and please endeavour to remember the program was established for our student-athletes to reach both their academic and athletic potentials. It is about growth in both learning and sporting pursuits, not who is or isn’t selected for a team.

Best Players across the day included: Ben Mifsud, John Tattersall, Lincoln Saad, Trae Beckley, Archie Penning and Max Mills.

Coaches Will Sexton and Dani Rhodes coached the Intermediate Girls team and stated “The girls played a very high quality level of footy. Great to see them develop upon what they’ve been training”.

Netball

Welcome to the end of week 4!! Our Junior Students eagerly preparing for their first round of SSV Divisional Round. Tuesday 20th YR 8 Girls and Thursday 22nd YR 7 Girls with our Junior boys not far away on the 5th June. Students are super excited.

We do have many students who have participated in the Barwon Region Junior Netball Competition for their association representative sides and we wish those competing in the upcoming Grand Final on Monday all the best!!

On court this week we have continued our specialist area focus enabling upskilling and further positional development. We have also with our junior students been working on systems and set plays from stoppages and reading off players and situations. With the Intermediate and Senior students, we have continued specialist Area work and also the complexities of tempo within again on playing quickly and direct vs slower and maintaining composure within the two different speeds of play. They are learning as a unit when scenarios may require which speed of play relevant to circumstances such as momentum, time and changing flow of play to our advantage.

In education student athletes have completed Cycle 2 and have just finished up completing individual templates for events such as NZ Tour and upcoming tournaments to assist in preparation factoring in all aspects of organisation, food & hydration, sleep, physical and mental preparation, exploring strategies so they can self-drive and manage their high-performance experiences.

With less that 40 days till the NZ Tour departs there is a sense of excitement. I would like to extend a huge thankyou to those parents, family members and students who assisted at the recent Election Day BBQ and Bake good fundraiser. The $2.5k raised will go towards valuable assistance in supporting experiences and resources. A big thankyou to Kerry Evans and husband Stuart for coordinating the event was an amazing day and a great community feel!!
