Year 3

It’s been a busy and exciting Term 2 in Year 3, and we’re only halfway through. Our students have been engaging in fantastic learning across all areas of the curriculum.

In Writing, students are working on their Dinosaur Information Projects. They have been researching a variety of dinosaurs and writing interesting facts about where they lived, what they ate, and what made them unique.

In Maths, we are learning to tell the time and strengthening our addition and subtraction skills. Students are becoming confident with reading both analogue and digital clocks and using different strategies to solve number problems.

In Science, we are exploring space and the concept of night and day. We have been learning about the sun, the Earth’s rotation, and how this causes changes in light and shadow. Students are also discovering fascinating facts about the moon and the planets in our solar system.

In Humanities, our focus is on culture. Students are learning about different traditions, languages, foods and celebrations from around the world. They have been sharing their own cultural backgrounds, helping to build respect and appreciation for diversity in our classroom.

We also have a number of exciting events coming up that we are all looking forward to. These include our Space Day and Science Incursion, where students will enjoy hands-on space-related activities. The Athletics Carnival is approaching, giving students the opportunity to participate in a fun day of physical activity and sportsmanship. During Education Week, parents and carers are invited into the classroom to share in the learning experience. There will also be a Book Sale in the library where students and families can browse and purchase books to enjoy at home.

We are looking forward to a fun and memorable second half of the term. Thank you for your continued support.

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

The year 4’s have been having an amazing term 2 so far!

In Reading we have been working on exploring informative texts and now we are moving on to reading different forms of poetry. We are also continuing to use our reading comprehension strategies such as analysing and critiquing, identifying theme, looking at the authors message, making connections, inferences and summarising.

In our writing unit we have just finished publishing our very own information book on either Book Creator or PowerPoint ensuring we have shown our knowledge of non-fiction text features by including many of them for our land animal information text. We are beginning to write different forms of poetry whilst ensuring we are exploring poetic devices such as personification, similes, metaphors, alliteration, rhyme, imagery and many more.

Our Maths unit involved the students solving various addition and subtraction problems that apply to real life. They do this by choosing the most efficient strategy such as the split strategy or vertical algorithm. We have also been measuring angles, working out the area and perimeter for shapes and we are about to begin our time unit.

In science we have been exploring Earth and space and in humanities and health we have been looking at our identity, heritage, culture and we are also exploring the history of Australia and our first nations people.

The year 4’s also thoroughly enjoyed having our parents visit on education week to watch us hard at work and help us out with our humanities task!

Let’s not forget about our amazing Werribee Zoo excursion!!!

The students had a blast at Werribee Zoo! We were able to look at animals that we were writing our information texts on and watch them in their habitat and see them up close!

We got to see loads of amazing animals such as hippos, elephants, wild dogs, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceros, gorillas and so much more. We went on a huge safari bus and viewed all the animals in their natural habitat. It was a great experience!

Below are some pictures of our day at the zoo for you to enjoy!

Year 5

Grade 5 students have had a very busy and exciting first half to the term. We have had lots of different events such as The Science Discovery Dome, Education week and Athletics Carnival which have all been lots of fun!

In reading, students have been focusing on a range of different comprehension strategies and working on how to structure their reading responses. In writing, students have been writing their information report on a topic of their choice and are currently in the process of publishing these. Students have been very dedicated and proud to publish their information report. In Maths, students have been learning about factors, multiples, multiplication strategies and perimeter and area.

Here are some of our published front covers for our information report. We cannot wait to share our finished copies with our families and friends.

Kind regards,

Year 6

So far, this term has been super fun! Check out what we have been up too!

In English, we have been learning about literary voices and scientific voices in texts and how the writer uses these to convey a message. We have also been working on an information report, on different topics of choice! Next, we need to take our information report and turn it into a hybrid text! That’s a mix of both fiction and non-fiction!

In Maths, we have been learning to solve multiplication problems using different strategies. We will use this knowledge when we begin to solve division problems. We have also been reading the time, and looking at and calculating the difference in time from around the world.

In Humanities, we have been learning about Australian History with the focus on Indigenous Australia.

In Science, we have been learning about the layers of the Earth, tectonic plates and how natural disasters occur. We got to do a practical using crackers and blue icing sugar to mimic how the tectonic plates move and what damage this movement causes.

In other news, we have been super busy! We have versed different schools during interschool sports and been catching up with our prep buddies. Unfortunately, no Brookside teams made the final, but we all had fun, showed great sportsmanship and loved the experience. We cannot wait to train for the next round of sports. Something we are looking forward to is our 3-6 athletics carnival and excursion to the MCG!
