PREP

Our Prep students have been busy putting their growing letter-sound knowledge to excellent use during our daily dictation sessions. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence develop as they stretch out words, listen carefully to sounds, and record them with increasing independence. Their focus and enthusiasm have been a joy to watch!

Another highlight this fortnight has been our Grade Six buddies session. The Year 6’s wrote thoughtful and imaginative picture books especially for their Prep buddies. The excitement was evident as the younger students worked alongside their older peers to illustrate the stories, bringing the words to life with colour and creativity.

We were also thrilled to welcome so many families to our open morning celebrating Education Week. Parents and carers joined us in the classroom for a hands-on session, where students proudly shared their learning and worked together to create family trees. It was a beautiful celebration of our classroom community and the connections that shape us all.

The Prep Team

Year 1

This term, our Year 1 students have been diving into the world of information reports. We've explored a variety of informative texts, using them as inspiration to research topics and create our own reports.

In Science, we’ve been investigating changes in the sky and the landscape, with a special focus on the seasons and how they affect our environment. The students were so inspired that they each researched their favourite season and wrote an informative piece about it!

In Mathematics, we’ve been exploring patterns through colours and numbers. We've also been practising skip counting and extending repeating patterns—skills that have brought both challenge and enjoyment.

It’s been a fun and exciting term of learning, and we’re looking forward to discovering even more next term!

Year 2

Term 2 has been a busy and exciting time for our Year 2 students with many fun and exciting activities. They have embraced positive work habits and are becoming more independent learners.

Reading

Our reading focus has centered around comprehending informative texts. Students have been actively using skills such as summarising, synthesising, word-solving, and questioning to deepen their understanding of what they read and explore various topics. In addition to this, students have been reinforcing their phonological awareness, which aids in learning letter sounds and spelling patterns. They have been practicing these skills through activities like dictated sentences and decodable readers. Reading aloud at home continues to be an invaluable way to support your child’s literacy development.

Writing

In Writing, students have been developing their skills in fact-based writing by learning how to structure informative texts. They’ve been exploring key features such as headings, subheadings, and diagrams, and are learning to organise their ideas clearly using subheadings and paragraphs. As part of the process, students have also been practising important research and note-taking skills to help gather and organise information effectively.

Alongside this, they continue to build essential writing skills including punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure. We’ve also been integrating grammar into our lessons, with a focus on applying spelling rules in their writing and continuing to develop neat, legible handwriting.

This week, students will have the exciting opportunity to publish their informative pieces and share their work with their peers—a wonderful way to celebrate their learning and progress!

Numeracy

In Mathematics, students have been learning to recognise and work with fractions as parts of a whole. They are exploring halves, quarters, and eighths, and learning to represent these fractions in a variety of ways. To help bring these concepts to life, students have been folding paper, cutting shapes, and using real-life items like fruit and fairy bread to model fractions in hands-on and meaningful ways.

Students are also identifying fractions in different contexts—within shapes, collections of objects, and on number lines. They are beginning to solve problems involving halves, quarters, and eighths, building both their understanding and confidence with fractions.

Science

In our current Science unit, students have been learning about everyday objects and the materials they are made from. They are exploring a variety of materials—such as wood, plastic, fabric, and glass—and investigating the properties that make each material suitable for different uses. For example, students discovered that glass is transparent, which makes it ideal for windows.

To make this learning hands-on and fun, students have been using a range of materials to design and create their own puppets. This creative activity has helped them apply their understanding of material properties in a meaningful and imaginative way.

Students are also learning about sustainability and how materials can be reused or recycled to reduce waste and care for the environment.

Humanities and Health

In Health, students are learning how to stay safe in a range of environments. They’ve been exploring safety practices when riding bikes, using sunscreen and hats outdoors, reading safety signs, and acting responsibly around water. These practical lessons help students make safe choices in their daily lives.

"Now I know why we wear helmets on bikes – they protect our heads!"

In our Respectful Relationships lessons, students have been developing their emotional intelligence. They are learning how to express a wide range of emotions in respectful and appropriate ways. Through guided discussions and role-play, students are practising strategies to handle social situations and solve problems thoughtfully.

"If someone feels left out, I can ask them to join our game!"

In our History unit, students have been exploring how changes over time have shaped their personal, family, and community lives. They’ve been identifying significant events in their own and their family’s histories, and learning that these experiences can differ depending on cultural background. Through the use of timelines, photos, and shared stories, students are developing an understanding of how both the past and present contribute to their identity today.

A highlight of this learning was our Education Week celebration, where families were invited into the classroom to share in our learning. Parents joined us to talk about their own stories, backgrounds, and celebrations, helping students appreciate the rich diversity of our community.

This meaningful experience helped students deepen their understanding of culture, family traditions, and how history connects us all.
