At DCC, our Careers team is passionate about creating opportunities for students to be INSPIRED about their futures and to INVESTIGATE their options. We recognise that students benefit from being exposed to a range of ideas and pathways as they begin discerning their first steps beyond Secondary school. In the Senior School, our approach is to facilitate events and programs that encourage future thinking and planning.
One of the highlights of our program is the Inspire Careers Expo, a biennial event which took place this year on Tuesday 6 May. Guided by a glowing path of light bulbs into our Community Hub, students from Years 9 -12 explored exciting possibilities for their future. Over 570 people registered, with even more joining on the night. Attendees had the chance to engage with pathway providers and hear directly from our Alumni about their unique career journeys.
The ‘Pathways’ space showcased 29 different providers, including universities, TAFEs, private colleges, gap year organisations, and post-school employment opportunities. Students were invited to move through this space and learn about the wide range of options available.
For students in Years 9 and 10, the experience was an eye-opening introduction to the various career routes available. In contrast, our Year 11 and 12 students tended to engage more deliberately, often using the evening as a fact-finding mission aligned with their personal interests.
In the ‘Journeys’ area, we welcomed 33 Alumni who generously shared their career stories. Their experiences spanned a wide range of industries, including Business & Finance, Christian Ministry & Social Work, Design & Media, Education, Conservation & Environment, Engineering, Sport & Fitness, Health/Medical Research, Public Health, Trades, Law & Politics, Science, and IT.
Students were encouraged not only to connect with Alumni in careers they’re interested in, but also to be inspired by the diverse and sometimes unexpected direction others have taken.
We consistently encourage students to seek guidance and learn from others, be it family, friends, mentors, or members of their church community. We are deeply thankful to our Alumni, who willingly return to extend our students’ networks and provide meaningful insight into various fields.
Many students have shared that this event sparked new thinking and broadened their sense of what’s possible. They left feeling inspired and better equipped to explore their next steps.
An event of this scale depends on the support of a dedicated community. Sincere thanks go to our Alumni, maintenance team, administration staff, and careers team. We also thank the families who attended and navigated the full car park to support their young people!
For those who missed out, don’t worry, we’ll be back in 2027 with another Inspire Careers Expo!
