Year 4 Art Excursion: THE LUME Melbourne

Eleanor Roberts, Primary Visual Art Specialist Teacher

What a beautiful day it was for our Year 4 excursion to THE LUME Melbourne! With the sun shining brightly, our students set off excited to immerse themselves in the world of art - and what an experience it turned out to be!

From the moment we stepped inside, students were captivated by the stunning projections all around them. The colourful, animated artworks brought Van Gogh’s paintings to life in a way that was both visually stimulating and deeply engaging. The moving images and the immersive soundtrack created a magical and exciting atmosphere.

A highlight for many students was getting the chance to create their own drawing at the easels. Following a guided drawing video, they enjoyed re-creating a Van Gogh scene step by step with amazing results. Many students also enjoyed the interactive rooms with mirrors and moving images.

After our artistic adventure, we enjoyed a relaxing lunch outside on the steps of the Melbourne Convention Centre, followed by a fun play in the grassy area opposite the Polly Woodside.

Overall, it was a memorable excursion and a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the life and art of Vincent van Gogh. We’re sure this colourful experience will stay with our students for a long time to come!

Year 4 Camp: Forest Edge

Mariah Reed, Year 4 Team Leader

This week our Year 4 students enjoyed an unforgettable adventure at Camp ADANAC, and what a joy it was to witness their growth, courage and sense of community across the three days.

Blessed with beautiful weather and delicious meals, the Year 4s threw themselves into each activity with enthusiasm - from the thrill of the flying fox and the challenge of canoeing to the chaos and fun of thunder hockey.

Camp provided a rich opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zones, take on new challenges and support one another along the way. We were so proud to see resilience grow and friendships deepen, with many students surprising even themselves with what they were capable of achieving. Whether it was trying a new activity for the first time, sleeping away from home, or simply cheering on a friend, Camp ADANAC 2025 will be one to remember.

We are especially grateful to our incredible team of parent helpers, whose generosity, encouragement and willingness to get involved helped make the camp such a success.

Year 5 Excursion: Sovereign Hill

Hannah Simpkins, Year 5 Teacher

The scent of campfire smoke, the steady plod of horse hooves on dusty roads, and the sight of people dressed in 19th-century attire greeted our Year 5 students as they stepped into Sovereign Hill on Thursday, 8th May. It felt as though we had travelled back in time to the days of Victoria’s gold rush!

Students explored the underground mines, dipped candles by hand, exchanged their coins for sweet treats and souvenirs along the bustling main street, and soaked up the lively atmosphere of this living museum. Some even managed to find precious specks of gold while panning in the river – though not all of us were so lucky!

A highlight of the day was our education session, where students had the opportunity to handle real artefacts from the 1800s. This hands-on experience deepened their understanding of daily life during the gold rush and brought our history learning to life.

Here are some fun facts we learned about life on the Goldfields:

The ‘Welcome Nugget’ found in Ballarat, is the second largest nugget found in Australia. It weighs 69 kilograms! – Scarlett

In the 1800s, the candle making factory had to be miles out of town because it stunk so bad, as they were making candles out of tallow! – Allegra

If we were living in that time, we would have to finish school and get a job at age 12! – Olivia
