Reconciliation Week

On Wednesday May 27th, we celebrated National Reconciliation Day. We were fortunate to have Jaron from Cultural Infusion join us for a smoking ceremony, a musical performance and dancing. Our Indigenous students ran an assembly for the whole school.
Reconciliation aims to strengthen respectful relationships between people. Its aim is to provide fairer and equal spaces for everybody to engage in.
National Reconciliation Week is observed in Australia each year, from May 27th to June 3rd and commemorates two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey: the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision in 1992.
The referendum in 1967 removed discriminatory practices from the Australian constitution and allowed for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be officially counted as a part of the Australian population.
The High Court Mabo decision in 1992 recognised native title, affirming that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people had rights over their traditional lands, even after British Colonisation.
Reconciliation Week is a time for Australians to learn about shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how they can contribute to reconciliation.
It is a reminder that reconciliation is an ongoing process and provides opportunities for all of us, as individuals and communities to learn, reflect, and take positive action towards achieving reconciliation.
The theme for National Reconciliation Week in 2025 is Bridging Now to Next. Itreflects the ongoing connection between past, present and future. Bridging Now to Next calls on all of us to step forward together, to look ahead and continue to push forward as past lessons guide us.
Thank you to everyone for your participation in our special assembly.
