SWPBS (School Wide Postive Behaviour Support)

Positive Reinforcements for SWPBS

Positive acknowledgement of behaviour is a fundamental component of SWPBS. Research indicates that you can improve behaviour by 80% by pointing out what someone is doing correctly. At WPS, we acknowledge positive behaviours in several ways.

Golden Tickets are a part of Whittlesea Primary School’s Tier 1 positive reinforcement systems. Staff members hand out Golden Tickets when students have demonstrated exemplary behaviour following school expectations. Golden Tickets acknowledge the positive behaviour displayed by a student. The primary purpose is to recognise and reinforce the behaviour that the student has demonstrated. The Golden Ticket is not the focus. Golden Tickets can be redeemed at Whittlesea  World on designated days.

Staff use 2 Part Praise to acknowledge the expectations and then provide specific feedback on how the expectation was demonstrated. For example:

● You helped others succeed by being patient.

● You did your best by persevering and attempting the task several times.

● You respected our school by putting your rubbish straight into the bin.

All Golden Tickets are entered onto a school-wide spreadsheet. This data is then provided to all staff several times each term to ensure that all students are being monitored and acknowledged. Data is also collected to monitor which expectations are being recognised, the frequency of tickets being given and the total number of tickets awarded by each staff member. Data collected is discussed at team meetings.

House Tokens are also a part of Whittlesea Primary School’s Tier 1 positive reinforcement systems. Staff give house tokens when students demonstrate positive school behaviour expectations. The idea is that house tokens are handed out ‘free and frequent’ for all positive behaviours that don’t require a Golden Ticket, e.g. lining up safely, following teacher instructions or picking up rubbish off the floor. House tokens are collated each week by House Captains and added to an ongoing recording sheet. At the end of each Term, the house with the most tokens is part of a ‘House Reward’ to be decided by House Captains and the Wellbeing Team.

Other school-wide acknowledgment systems include:

  • Principal’s Awards – Awarded at Whole School Assemblies
  • Star of the Week – Awarded weekly in Classrooms & Specialist classes
  • A Learning Legend – Awarded at whole School Assemblies

📚 Worried About Your Child’s Learning or Behaviour?

It’s completely normal to have concerns about how your child is going – both at school and at home. If you're feeling unsure or would like some guidance, there are a number of steps you can take to support your child.

👩‍🏫 Step 1: Chat to the Classroom Teacher

Your child’s teacher sees them every day in a setting that’s quite different from home. They can offer valuable insights and are a great first port of call.

💙 Step 2: Contact the Wellbeing Team

If you’re still feeling unsure, get in touch with our Wellbeing Team. We’re here to talk through your concerns and explain what support is already in place – and what additional support could be available.

👨‍⚕️ Step 3: Visit Your GP

Your family doctor is another important support. They can help identify the most appropriate professionals and guide you through referral options. Medicare rebates may be available depending on the service.

Here are some professionals they might suggest:

  • Paediatrician 👶A doctor who specialises in children’s health (ages 0–18). Helpful for physical health or developmental concerns.
  • Psychologist 🧠A mental health professional who supports emotional wellbeing and provides strategies for things like anxiety, depression, trauma, and emotional regulation.
  • Speech Pathologist 💬Supports children with speaking, listening, reading, writing, stuttering, and understanding language.
  • Occupational Therapist (OT) 👐Assists with challenges that affect a child’s daily functioning – emotionally, socially, or physically.

📌

📅 Step 4: Book an Appointment Early

Waitlists can be long – it’s okay to join more than one list and ask to be added to cancellation lists. If you’re unsure, put your child’s name down anyway – you can always postpone or cancel later. It’s better to be prepared than to wait when you really need help.

📌🏫 Step 5: Keep Us in the Loop

Please keep your child’s teacher and the school updated. The more we know, the better we can work together. We’re always happy to connect with external professionals to ensure consistent, wraparound support for your child.

💬 Need Help or Have Questions?
