Maths

This fortnight in Maths, students explored a range of strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems within 20. Using ten-frames and counters, they learned to represent number stories visually and efficiently.

A key focus was on subitising - recognising when a ten-frame is full without counting each counter - and counting on from 10 to find totals.

Students also learned how to use mathematical symbols correctly, including the addition symbol (+) and the equals symbol (=), and practised writing number sentences to match pictures and real-world scenarios. We introduced the concept of equivalence by exploring different number sentences that represent the same total (e.g., 3 + 2 = 4 + 1).

Towards the end of the week, we focused on understanding the concept of ‘difference’ by comparing two collections. Students practised using drawings, counting on and back, and hands-on materials to work out how many more or fewer were in one group than another.

Throughout the week, students also continued to build fluency with skip counting by 5s forwards and backwards during our daily Maths Blast sessions.

Writing

Students have been preparing to write information reports by learning the difference between fact and opinion. They have practised writing factual statements about their families. This week, students will begin exploring how different foods are produced. They will gather information and use it to plan and write their own informative reports.

Inquiry

A couple of weeks ago, each student planted a seed. We are eagerly waiting for them to grow, and the students are enjoying seeing whose seed is starting to sprout.
