Fire Education Program

The past two weeks have been filled with a variety of valuable learning experiences. The visit from the Frankston firefighters provided an excellent opportunity for students to learn how to keep themselves and their families safe in the event of an emergency. This activity also helped strengthen our connection with these incredible community helpers. Climbing into the firetruck and squirting water from the fire hose were the biggest highlights of the afternoon.

Maths

In Maths, students explored the features of common 2D shapes, identifying key characteristics. They then sorted the shapes based on the number of sides, the shape of the sides, size, and colour. Using a variety of objects, students grouped them according to shape, colour, size, and category. Finally, they combined different shapes to create pictures, applying their learning in a creative way.

This week, the Preps are counting forwards and backwards from 0 to 20 and 20 to 0. Slowly and carefully saying the number names. In addition, they counted the quantity of collections to 20 using one-to-one correspondence.

Literacy

After listening to the story 'Daisy Eat Your Peas', the students listed all the vegetables that they like to eat. Then they drew a picture of their favourite vegetable and wrote the sentence I like ... The students are encouraged to speak in full sentences, and the content of the sentence relates to the events in the story.

In InitiaLit, they are segmenting, blending, reading, and writing CVC words that contain taught letters and sounds. They participate in small group activities, such as rhyming games, beginning sound isolation, making letters, and manipulating sounds to form words.

Education in Faith

In Education in Faith, the Preps watched the Laudato Si video. Laudato Si is an encyclical of Pope Francis, subtitled "on care for our common home". The message is that we need to work together to heal our Earth. The students discussed ways that people on Earth can protect and care for God's beautiful creation, the Earth. They then created prayers of petition, asking for God's help. Today is World Environment Day, and during morning prayer, we said the above prayer.
