Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon

Last weekend saw Marist host St Patrick’s College for our sporting fixtures. On Friday night our 1st IV chess team has another tough loss. On Saturday the 1st XI football team played out a gripping 2-all draw against Pats in what could prove a decisive result in the premiership hunt. The 1st XV were strong in defeating Pats comfortably and remain top of the table.

We currently have the following undefeated teams across rugby, football and chess:

  • Football: 1st XI; 2nd XI; 5th XI; 6th XI; 10A; 10B; 10C; 9A; 9B; 9D; 8A; 8B; 8C; 7B; 7D; 6A; 6B; 6C Blue; 6C Gold; 6D; 6 Violet; 5A; 5B; 5C.
  • Rugby: 1st XV; 2nd XV; 3rd XV; 4th XV; 5th XV; 6th XV; 7Th XV; 8th XV; 9th XV; 10A; 10B; 10C; 10D; 9B; 8A; 8B; 8D; 6D.
  • Chess: Junior A; Junior B; Junior C.

This weekend we travel to Runcorn to take on St Laurence’s College in a big weekend. It is their Old Boys Day. Again, it is a big round with games at home and some games at alternate venues, please check the draw carefully.

As the weather starts to turn, a reminder that boys must be in Marist apparel for training and games. That includes arriving at the ground and going home. If you are staying to watch matches you must change into your school uniform.

There has been a rise in the numbers of boys arriving or leaving in thongs. Please make sure you have covered footwear on at all times.

School Spirit and Commitment- Living Our Marist Values Through Sport

At Marist College Ashgrove, sport is far more than competition — it is a powerful expression of our Marist values and a vital part of forming young men of character. Each time our students step onto the field, court, or track, they are given the opportunity to live out the values that define us.

Presence is shown in the way our boys support one another — turning up for training, encouraging teammates, and staying connected, win or lose. To be present is to give your best, not just for yourself, but for your brothers beside you.

Simplicity reminds us that greatness lies in doing the basics well — showing up on time, wearing the uniform with pride, and training with quiet determination. These small acts build habits that last well beyond the school years.

Family Spirit is seen when a team celebrates together, lifts each other after a tough game, and respects coaches, referees, and opponents. This spirit unites us as one College.

Love of Work drives the commitment needed for early mornings, late finishes, and pushing through setbacks. Our teams know that effort and persistence often matter more than talent.

And finally, In the Way of Mary — with humility, compassion, and strength. Mary inspires us to serve others, lead gently, and persevere.

May our students continue to grow as young men of faith, character, and commitment — on the field and in life.

We are in full swing for our cross country season. With our interhouse championship a couple of weeks ago, our first AIC leadup meet this week and we are getting ready for Met North trials next week and just over two weeks to go to the AIC championship. Marist has a proud history and tradition in the sport of cross country and we wish all our runners, led by Coordinator Mr Matt Millward, the very best as they prepare hard for the AIC championships.

Parents and spectators need to demonstrate the following behaviours regarding their conduct during any AIC sporting activity:

Be welcoming of other competitors and spectators and always model respectful interactions.

  • Respect referees and officials' decisions and teach your son to do likewise.
  • Remember that your son participates in sport for their own enjoyment.
  • Remember that this is a schoolboy game, and all coaches and match officials are volunteers.
  • Show appreciation for the coaches and teachers - including the opposing team. Without them, your son could not participate.
  • Encourage your son to participate, do not force them. Focus on your son's efforts rather than his performance or the result of the game.
  • Remember that all correspondence around sport should be respectful and appropriate, and directly through your son's College.
  • Never ridicule or yell at your son and other boys for making a mistake.
  • Be a positive role model. Remember that boys learn best by example. Appreciate good performance and skilful play by all participants.
  • AIC events are not an appropriate space/venue for matters involving family disputes. This includes ensuring all parties follow appropriate court orders around visitation and attendance at activities.

The AIC supports all efforts to remove poor behaviour from sporting events. In the event that a parent feels the need to notify the AIC of inappropriate behaviour, they should firstly notify the venue official/College representative at the venue. Following this, any complaint should be then directed to their son's College's Head of Sport or the appropriate member of the College Leadership Team.

Marist Rugby Referees | Thank You

Following the success of our Referee Ready Program in Term 1, we were proud to see two more students make their refereeing debuts over the weekend, while two others continued to build on their experience.

Congratulations to Jimmy Travers (Year 8) and Tom Cross (Year 8) on their confident and composed debuts. Well done also to Ryan Sleader (Year 9) and Matt Travers (Year 10) for their ongoing commitment and development as referees within our rugby program.

A sincere thank you to Mr Drew Meehan for his continued support as a mentor to our young referees. Whether through his organisation behind the scenes or officiating on the field himself, Drew is an invaluable contributor to Marist rugby.

All four students represented the College exceptionally well and are to be commended for their respectful approach and calm decision-making.

Our referee program continues to set a standard within AIC rugby. Please help us ensure our referees feel encouraged, respected, and supported each week.

Marist Rugby Union | Round 3 vs St Pat’s College

Thank you to everyone who came out to support Round 3 of the AIC Rugby season. After a period of considerable wet weather, Saturday began with drizzle and soft fields, but by mid-morning, the clouds cleared and we were treated to a beautiful day of sunshine and rugby.

In total, 33 of the 36 Marist teams played at home — a huge day for the College and a credit to the grounds team, canteen staff and support, the medical team, the referees, and coaches who ensured everything ran smoothly. Across the day, we played fixtures against eight different schools to guarantee every Marist rugby player had the opportunity to take the field. A highlight of the day was welcoming the Gregory Terrace 13A team to our campus as part of the strong relationship between Marist and the GPS rugby programs.

The day also marked our annual Old Boys Sports Day, where we welcomed back the 1st XV teams of 1955, 1965, 1975, and 1985 from both Marist College Ashgrove and Marist College Rosalie. It was particularly special to have two members of the 1955 1st XV join us on the day. Their presence was a great reminder of the long-standing tradition and community that surrounds our rugby program.

But the main focus was on the field. From the opening whistle at 8:00am to the conclusion of the 1st XV match at 4:40pm, Marist rugby was on full display.

The 1st XV continued their undefeated run in a scrappy match that also featured some extraordinary high-quality skills, effort, and exceptional tries. The 2nd XV, 3rd XV and 4th XV also maintained their unbeaten records with strong displays of physical attacking rugby and excellent teamwork. With exception of the 6th XV who lost a very competitive match on Saturday to our 5th XV, our Opens cohort remains undefeated after three rounds, which is a fantastic achievement. The attendance of the Year 11 and 12 students from the 1st XV through to the 9th XV, and the manner in which they are playing their rugby, is a testament to the effort being put in across training and game day.

The Year 10 teams had a mixed but competitive day. The 10A team impressed with an excellent win, showcasing organisation and skill under pressure, but also an excellent defensive display. The 10B vs 10C match brought a unique energy to the morning as two Marist teams faced off in a fiercely fought local derby. The 10E team faced a tough challenge against Iona’s 10C side and went down in a competitive match.

In the Year 9 cohort, the 9A team were edged out in a physical and tightly contested battle. Despite the result, as we would expect from our teams, the performance reflected plenty of effort and character. The remaining Year 9 teams continued to play with strong intent and are showing pleasing signs of continued development each week.

The Year 8s were involved in a great round of rugby across the board. The players are continuing to deliver a consistent performance across the year level with some excellent Marist catch pass, improved teamwork, and a genuine competitive resilience, all of which will serve them well as the season progresses.

After a positive showing in Round 2, the Year 7A team came up against a very strong St Pat’s outfit and were outplayed on the day. The 7B and 7C teams both had excellent wins, fought hard and continue to grow in confidence and cohesion. Well done to our 7D team who were undermanned and outgunned by the Iona 7C side, however they were strong in defeat.

Overall, it was a day that celebrated everything good about Marist Rugby — strong competition, deep tradition, and a focus on every student having the chance to contribute on the field. Thank you to our coordinators, coaches, referees, and supporters for helping deliver another memorable day of rugby at the College.

We now turn our attention to Round 4 with plenty to be proud of and even more to work on.

Marist Rugby Union | Dress Code

Thanks to the 99% of students who are wearing the correct Marist rugby union clothing! In the past three seasons, we’ve made a deliberate shift in our standards and expectations to ensure our teams are presented at the highest level.

Following the team photos on the weekend, it was noticeable that a very small group of students are cutting their rugby socks and wearing them over a different coloured sock. This is not part of the rugby union uniform and I ask that this week you use the time to buy a new pair of rugby socks.

Marist Old Boy | Australian Selection

Congratulations to Lee Martin (Class of 2023), who has recently been selected to represent Australia at the Pacific Mini Games in Palau this July. Lee will compete in the Open Men’s Shot Put, throwing the senior 7.26kg implement.

After securing silver at the 2024 National Championships in the U20 age group and posting strong performances across multiple meets — including a high national ranking in the Open Men’s Division — Lee has earned this well-deserved national selection.

While balancing a demanding study and training schedule, Lee continues to give back to the Marist community, coaching our young throws athletes in the Marist Track and Field program.

This is not only a reflection of Lee’s hard work and talent but also a testament to the long-standing support and guidance of Coach Des Davis, Head Coach of Throws at Marist, who has mentored Lee since his primary school days.

We wish Lee every success on the international stage.

Round 3 vs St Patricks College

Round 3 saw us taking on St Patrick’s College with the junior draw (Years 5-8) scheduled away at Shorncliffe and the senior draw (Years 9-12) at home in Ashgrove. Unfortunately, the persistent rain throughout the week was too much for the grounds at St Pat’s and all matches were called off. This weekend was a true test of our facilities and displayed how fortunate we are to have such fantastic grounds onsite. The Ashgrove home matches were the only set of games across the AIC that had zero cancelations as we pushed forward with a full slate of matches on Flat 5, Flat 6 and Cameron Oval.

Well done to all teams that played on Saturday with strong performances coming through from supplementary games in the Primary school right through to our Opens teams. Its incredible that we are already halfway through the AIC Football season and fingers crossed we are through the last of the disruptions and all teams can find some rhythm in the final rounds.

The 1st XI played out a nail-biting 2-2 draw against St Pat’s in what is expected to be a pivotal match come the end of the season. The boys overcame plenty of adversity to equalize twice after conceding goals in the 1st minute of both halves. A special mention to Miles Sartoni scoring two goals including a brilliant overhead volley in the 65th minute (Livestream Link). With 2 wins and a draw so far, the team has clarity as 4 wins from here on would secure Ashgrove an 11th outright premiership. Another big test awaits this weekend against a 3rd place St Laurence’s College that will be looking to keep their premiership hopes alive.

Football – Training Schedules

The Football training schedule will be posted weekly on the Orbit App for all parents to see. Now that the majority of public holidays / student free days have occurred there will be very little movement in training days (if any) for the vast majority of Football teams. If you are unable to make your training or game, please let your year level coordinator know so they can advise the coaching staff:

Year 5 Coordinator – Mr Michael Jones (jonesmi@marash.qld.edu.au)

Year 6 Coordinator – Mrs Rachelle Garton (gartonr@marash.qld.edu.au)

Football Training | Wet Weather Plan

Football training will rarely be called off due to bad weather. If rain is forecast, students are asked to place their school bags and formal hats under cover.
