Strength Through Struggle:
A Reflection from Year 7 Camp
At our recent Year 7 Camp, students took part in a low ropes challenge designed to test balance, resilience and teamwork.
A key concept introduced was 'spotting', being present, close and ready to support a partner as they navigated the course.
What was fascinating was how students interpreted that support.
Many instinctively stepped in to steady ropes for their partner, hold hands, move equipment to make an obstacle easier, or even place a partner’s foot onto the next element. The desire to help was genuine and generous. But when instructions were adjusted, asking spotters to remain close and ready, yet not touch their partner or the equipment, the challenge became much harder.
Students wanted to rescue their partner at the first wobble. Yet when a student wrestled with the instability, recalibrated, and finally reached the next tyre independently, the sense of accomplishment was noticeably greater.
This experience prompted reflection on a broader truth. In a culture that often prizes smooth outcomes and visible success, it can be tempting, for all of us, to remove obstacles quickly. As parents and educators, we naturally want to protect and support.
However, growth rarely occurs without some degree of struggle.
As a College community, we continue to partner with you in nurturing capable, resilient young people. That often means being present, attentive and ready, but not stepping in too quickly. Sometimes the very struggle we are tempted to remove is the space where character is formed, confidence is built, and learning is deepened.
Thank you for the many ways you support your children to grow not only in achievement, but in resilience and trust.
