Year 3/4 Team News

with Katja, Grace,Kayleen, Alison, Hayley & Katherine

Hello Year  3/4 families,

It has been a busy fortnight in Grade 3/4 with our Grade 3s sitting their NAPLAN assessments. The teachers are so proud of the way that the Grade 3s have organised themselves for each assessment and tried their best with each question. Well done Grade 3s on a fabulous achievement!

We are also looking forward to welcoming families into our classrooms next Wednesday 25th March for Open Afternoon from 3:30pm - 4:15pm. The Grade 3/4s have been busy preparing a range of tasks to share with you next week, that showcase the work we have been focusing on in Term One.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 9 - 10

Literacy: In Reading, we are finishing our study of the class novel ‘Paper Planes’ and will compare and contrast it with the movie in Week 10. Students are also using their reading skills to follow instructions and make their own paper plane. We are looking forward to a Grade 3/4 paper plane competition in Week 9, where students will test their plane-making skills!

In Writing, we are continuing to explore information reports and are creating science lab reports based on the experiments we conduct during our Inquiry lessons.

Numeracy:  Addition and Subtraction: Using efficient calculation strategies for addition and subtraction problems involving larger numbers.

  • Add and subtract two- and three-digit numbers and beyond
  • Use a range of strategies such as the jump, split, compensation or vertical method
  • Use strategies to solve worded problems
  • Understand and apply the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction

InquiryOur inquiry question is ‘How do things move?’ We will continue exploring our understanding of contact and non-contact forces including force, friction and gravity and undertake experiments to deepen our understanding.

Willy Kids: This term's topic is ‘Willy Kids are Learners’. Willy Kids are always ready to learn and love learning new things! We are exploring how we can show that we are ready to learn.

Respectful RelationshipsThis term, students are looking at emotional literacy. The lessons aim to ensure students can describe the influence that people, situations and events can have on their emotions. They will also investigate how emotional responses may vary in intensity and understand how to interact positively with others in different situations.

Homework

Homework is a valuable tool in reinforcing what is being learnt at school. We want our students to think of homework as being an important activity that assists in preparation for life-long learning. All students will receive their homework at school on a Monday and it is due back at school on Friday of the same week.

Homework tasks include:

  • Reading – four nights per week for a minimum of 15 minutes. Students are to record the book titles for the week on the homework sheet.
  • Maths – playing the number games learnt in class at home to continue building number sense and revising learnt skills.
  • Spelling – suggested activities to help practise the words that your child has chosen.
  • Writing – a short writing task to be completed in your child’s Homework Book.

All students have a Homework Book in which they are encouraged to complete their tasks. Please contact your child’s teacher if there are any concerns or questions about the homework tasks.
