PRINCIPAL'S REPORT:

MORRISBY:
Next week, our Year 9 students will complete their Morrisby surveys. This comprehensive career profiling tool helps students explore potential career pathways based on their interests, strengths, and preferences. Through a series of thoughtful questions about their likes and dislikes, the survey can highlight work areas and career possibilities they may not have previously considered. Each student will then participate in a follow-up interview to help interpret their results and guide them in planning future pathways with confidence.
NAPLAN:
NAPLAN for 2026 begins on Wednesday, 11 March, and it’s an important moment in the school year for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The assessments give us a valuable snapshot of how students are developing the essential skills of reading, writing, numeracy and language conventions. While the tests are national, their purpose is personal—they help us understand how each child is tracking and where we can best support their learning.
Across the four assessment areas, students will engage with tasks that reflect the everyday work they already do in the classroom. In reading, they’ll explore and interpret a variety of texts; in writing, they’ll respond creatively and thoughtfully to a prompt; and in language conventions, they’ll demonstrate their grasp of spelling, punctuation and grammar. The numeracy assessment encourages students to apply their mathematical knowledge to real‑world scenarios, showing us how they reason, problem‑solve and think logically.
While NAPLAN is just one measure of learning, it plays a meaningful role in helping teachers and schools plan for the future. The insights gained guide classroom practice, highlight areas of strength, and identify where additional support may be needed. For families, the results offer another perspective on their child’s progress, complementing the continuous feedback provided by teachers throughout the year.
In the lead‑up to NAPLAN, the best support families can offer is simple: ensure students are well‑rested, have had a nutritious breakfast, and feel calm and confident. We want students to approach the assessments with a positive mindset, knowing they are not something to fear—they are simply an opportunity to show what they know.
We encourage every student to participate and give their personal best, knowing that NAPLAN helps us better understand how to support each learner in the future. Information in relation to this is on the School News page.
500 TECH TOKENS:
To date, 500 Tech Tokens have been distributed to students who have demonstrated our school values of Respect, Resilience, and Responsibility. This is a fantastic achievement and shows that our community is actively recognising and celebrating the positive choices students make every day. It also highlights the many encouraging conversations happening between students and teachers as we reinforce the values that matter most to us at KTHS.
Students can redeem their tokens by ‘spending’ them at the Token Shop, which will open before the end of term. Everyone is welcome to take part, and there will be a range of items available—the more tokens you’ve earned, the more options you’ll have to choose from!
KTHS SCHOOL COUNCIL:
School Council.
We are currently inviting parent nominations for School Council and warmly encourage you to consider becoming involved. Joining School Council is a rewarding opportunity to contribute to the direction and future of our school. It is especially exciting at this time, as we continue to grow and develop with the addition of new buildings and ongoing improvements. Your voice, ideas and perspective as a parent are incredibly valuable as we navigate these changes together.
Below you will find further information about the role of School Council and what is involved. We hope you will consider putting your name forward and being part of this important work.
WHAT IS A SCHOOL COUNCIL AND WHAT DOES IT DO?
All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally constituted bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within statewide guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students.
WHY IS PARENT MEMBERSHIP SO IMPORTANT?
Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school.
DO I NEED SPECIAL EXPERIENCE TO BE ON SCHOOL COUNCIL?
Each member brings their own valuable life skills and knowledge to the role. What you do need is an interest in your child's school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school's future.
HOW LONG IS A TERM Of OFFICE?
Two years with half of the members retiring each year which creates vacancies for the annual school council elections. Meetings are held the third Monday of every month.
WHERE TO IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO NOMINATE?
Self-nomination forms are available at the back of Tech Talk or on the information rack at the front office.
I would like to encourage our parent community to think about nominating for School Council. Together, we can continue to work to make Kerang Technical School a school to be proud of.
