Numeracy
Holidays are upon us once again and lots of us will be hitting the road or the skies in search of warmer weather or relaxation! Did you know that you can support your child’s numeracy skills by involving them in the planning of trips? Even if you’re not going away, you and your child can have some fun planning an imaginary holiday or even do some simple investigations that involve maps. You can find some great maps at the local Information centre or Council office. The library and the internet are also great resources for locations further abroad.
- Use maps to find out about the local area, places they go to, and where they are in relation to each other. Ask questions such as:
What parts of the map give information about distance?
Is Nanna’s house east or west of our house? How far is it?
Where is the supermarket in relation to the school? What is the distance between them?
Research travel destinations and ask:
- Where would you like to travel? Would you need a passport?
- How could you get there?
- How far is it?
- How long would that take?
- How much would travel and accommodation cost for the whole family?
- Use timetables to plan a trip on public transport and ask:
How long will the trip take?
When do you need to leave?
How much will it cost?
Could we get there another way that costs less or gets us there quicker?
Happy planning and safe travels!
