INQUIRY: Community Excursions

During week 10 we had Alycia from St. John’s Ambulance visit to teach us the important aspects of First Aid. The program was very interesting and interactive for everyone,  and taught the skills in an engaging and interactive way.  Students learnt how to help someone in an emergency through the DRSABCD model, and ways that they can call for help when they don’t have easy access to a phone.

There were quizzes and hands-on learning to ensure students could learn and consolidate these lifesaving skills.

“It was very cool and fun. I learnt how to put someone in the recovery position” - River.

“I liked being the model to show people the recovery position” - Hannah.

“ I learnt the DRSABCD action plan” - Evie.

Sophie - “I enjoyed learning about the recovery position”.

Sports Museum

During week 9 all students had the opportunity to visit the Rochester Sports Museum. Both students and teachers were blown away by the amazing sports exhibit which included many pieces of sporting memorabilia.  We learnt about how the items were collected and donated by the late John Forbes. We watched a video that told us how John was given each of the items by sporting stars as a sign of appreciation during his time at Puma.  After wandering around the exhibit, we then entered another exhibit which focused on Sir Hubert Opperman, a famous cyclist from Rochester.  On the way home we had the opportunity to view the Opperman statue and the murals.

Playground visits

We learnt lots about the Wirima Playground and the design process. It was fun to link the different elements to our Rochester walk that we did last week, including the walk along the Campaspe River and the Red Bridge to the play space. Thank you Beck & Heather for sharing all about the amazing play space! We also got to see the artwork on the silos and spot another artwork by the same artist, Jimmy, on the side of the Mouse House.

I loved playing on the Mouse House - Harper, Hope & Hunter

It was lots of fun finding the dinosaurs around the park and playing on the rock walls- Ned

I loved the cooking play space - Braxton, Ayla & Addi

I enjoyed playing in the Campaspe River sandpit that was beside the Red Bridge - Alice

I liked playing on the hammock - Evie

I liked playing with my friends in the teepee with the coloured materials - Jace

River Walk

This week, students had the chance to explore local attractions. The weather cooperated splendidly for our River Walk, providing a scenic backdrop. We were able to observe  the diverse landscapes along the Campaspe River. Encouraging students to engage their senses during the walk, many shared observations about the distinct smells, sounds, and signs of new growth along the riverbank.
