Wellbeing

By Jake Phin

As another year comes towards it’s end, we are provided with a great opportunity to look back on our successes in 2023 and motivate ourselves to all the possibilities that await us in 2024. A big success for our Wellbeing team this Term was supporting the hard work of our Year 9 Student Management and Connect staff with the 2023 Respect Cup.

For this event, Our 2024 Year 9 students engaged in a combination of a mixed sport competition and interactive workshops, which included a guest speaker from the Victorian Women’s Trust, to provide education around respect and how to safely challenge behaviours of concern. The Respect Cup supported the work of our college to embed Respectful Relationships education into our curriculum to the benefit of all students, their overall wellbeing and understanding of what constitutes healthy relationships.

The Respect Cup was the first event of this kind to be held in the City of Kingston, having been a successful initiative in the City of Greater Geelong previously. Our college, in collaboration with Better Health Network, was proud to host the inaugural event and will look to further champion the Respect Cup in the years to come.

The possibilities that a new year can bring are always exciting, especially when for many that will include a holiday break. The holidays however can be a particularly difficult time for some of our more vulnerable young people and their families. It is important that we continue to support each other as a community, looking out for the mental health and wellbeing of not only ourselves, but of those arounds us.

The attached flyer from Headspace highlights some strategies to support your young person during the holidays. This flyer also includes the contact details of a number of mental health services that can be accessed at any time. If you or someone you know of is in need of support, I encourage you to please make use of these valuable services.

Otherwise, if you or your young person are already linked in with external supports, such as a GP or Mental Health Clinician, please also consider seeking their advice and support as required over the holidays.

The Wellbeing Team and I wish you all a restful holiday break and happy new year!

Sincerely,

Jake and the Wellbeing Team
