BHCS Prep-Year 2 House Athletics Carnival

By Shane de Kretser (Primary Sports Co-ordinator)

On a beautiful Monday morning earlier this month, our Prep- Year 2 students participated in their House Athletics Carnival. Students competed in sprints, obstacle courses and various relays and throwing events in friendly competition against the other houses.

The day was a great picture of the culture of BHCS, with younger students being led by older students, and everyone engaging in a positive and passionate way. We had a number of Year 8 and Year 10 students who assisted in running the event stations, and all of these students should be commended for thearlier eir leadership and positive energy.

It was a close competition, but Wattle eventually came out on top!

1st place: WATTLE (Yellow) - 1679 points

2nd: SHERBROOKE (Green) - 1566 points

3rd: YARRA (Blue) - 1539 points

4th: MARUNARI (Red) - 1173 points

Thank you to all staff, parents and students who were involved in making the day a great success.

Harmonies & Talent Unleashed: Music Soirée 2023

By Darryl Thompson (Music Coordinator)

On Wednesday 1st of November we held our second Soirée for students in our Instrumental Music Program. With around 60 students taking music lessons at BHCS, it was  a full house, with around 25 performances on the night.

Students presented items on piano, guitar, drums and voice, with a wide range of experience and ability, which always makes for a wonderful evening's entertainment. It is always a privilege to see the development over the year.

Thank you to the tutors for their hard work nurturing these students. and thank you to the parents who are prepared to encourage the students and invest in their future this way. The waiting lists continue to grow!

Thanks also to Mrs Anca Dema, for her organisational skills, without whom nights like this would be far less frequent and to Ms Leanne Webster for the lovely supper!

Exploring Melbourne's Marvels: Year 9 City Camp Adventure

By Ben White (Year 9 Program Co-ordinator)

The Year 9 City Camp was a success, immersing students in Melbourne's CBD for a dynamic blend of education and adventure. Students climbed to the top of the Eureka Skydeck, merging their textbook knowledge with a breathtaking cityscape view at sunset from the 88th floor. From the LUME, the Aquarium, and ice skating at O'Brien Ice House, students experienced the attractions that Melbourne has to offer. However, it was seeing them working in teams, managing time, and exercising responsibly navigating on trains, trams, and by foot which was the most rewarding for the staff to see. To conclude the camp, students participated in the annual BHCS Amazing Race which turned the CBD into a playground of discovery with teams racing against the clock, solving clues, and unveiling hidden treasures.

Beyond the activities, the City Camp positively impacted student wellbeing fostering confidence, teamwork, and a broader perspective of where they live and the people around them. Special thanks to our dedicated teaching staff and supportive parents who made this unforgettable Melbourne journey possible. What a wonderful way to conclude the 2023 Year 9 Program!

Outstanding Achievements in ICAS Competition

By Ivan Seskis (Deputy Principal)

Back in Term 3, a number of select students participated in the ICAS Competition. The ICAS competition is a nation-wide assessment that recognises and rewards academic achievement in a number of subject areas. The questions in the ICAS assessment are engaging and fun and have been designed by psychometricians, education measurement experts, and experienced teachers to push students to their academic limits as well as test higher-order thinking and problem-solving abilities.

We recently received our certificates for students at BHCS, and these will be handed out shortly.

Year 5-10 students were nominated by their teachers to participate in the ICAS competition in the areas of Science, Mathematics and Writing.

Special mentions go to a number of our students who performed particularly well.

Ava E in Year 9 received a distinction for Writing, and Josiah A in Year 5 received a distinction for Science, both scores in the top 10% of the state.

Annalise M (Year 10) received a high distinction for Writing in the top 1% of scores in the state and, as such, also received a medal to recognise this achievement.

Congratulations to all students!
