Prep Readers in Action!
It’s been a big year in Prep, and all that hard work is paying off — we’re not stopping at being good readers, we are working towards being great readers 🎉. We’re diving into fluency, strengthening our comprehension skills, and building our reading stamina — and we practise every single day.
Grade 1 News
This term the grade ones are learning about ‘The Living World’. We have explored the different features of plants and have been learning about what plants need to grow and survive. This week we made our very own grass head plants and have checked that we have what we need to ensure successful growth. We hope to give you all an update on them in a few weeks time!
Grade 2 News
During our Religious Education lessons in Grade 2 we have been learning about the four Gospels in the Bible – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, and how they contain four similar but different portraits of Jesus.
As a stepping stone to understanding the importance of story, the students shared four photographs of different times in their lives, discussing the people involved, the setting and why the photo is special to them.
Scarlet shared photos of times that are special to her – when she was baptised, holding her newborn brother, dressing up for Halloween, and playing with an elephant on holiday in Thailand!
3/4 News
Reading
Paired reading provides students with the opportunity to demonstrate fluency, receive constructive feedback from a peer, and build confidence in an engaging and enjoyable way. This week, the 3/4 students practiced this reading strategy as we began our new novel, The Iron Man. This story centres around a mysterious and colossal robot that appears in a coastal farming village. The robot forms a friendship with a young boy named Hogarth, who helps him understand human emotions and values.
Religion
In our Religion class, we have been studying the parables of Jesus. Students have been examining how Jesus used simple stories to convey moral and spiritual lessons. As part of our in-depth exploration of the parable of The Lost Sheep, students engaged in activities such as constructing a set, creating characters, writing a script, and performing the story for their classmates.
5/6 Unit News
Our 5/6 Unit are well into reading our novel Tom Appleby - Convict Boy by Jackie French. We are really enjoying the conversation around the life of Tom as novel flicks between the 8-year-old taken as a convict and his 90-year-old self-reflecting on his life. 5/6 FB are using a timeline on our wall to keep track as the story progresses.
The students have been investigating Biomes as part of our Living Things unit. They have been looking at the different types of biomes and creating a PowerPoint on each of these. Ask your 5/6 to tell you about some of the different biomes within our natural environments.
We will be busy over the next few weeks with various sporting carnivals that our senior students will participate in to represent St Monica's. We wish them all good luck.
Feel free to drop in and see some beautiful artwork as you enter the 5/6 unit.
