Bizarre Bazaar Madagascar
As part of 'Creativity' unit this term, students are working in groups to design and produce a product that they can sell at a 'bazaar'. We have matched this up with our production of Madagascar, and students are creating Madagascar-themed products. All profits from the sales will go to a charity which the class will select. Most products will be created using resources sourced from our art room; however, students may elect to bring extra items from home. Teachers are not requesting that parents purchase supplies for students.
Once by Morris Gleitzman
Our class novel this term, is 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman. This novel tells the story of Felix, a young Jewish boy living in Poland during World War II, who is placed in an orphanage while his parents, who are booksellers, deal with "troubles". Felix believes he's only there temporarily and embarks on a journey to find his parents, unaware of the dangers of Nazi-occupied Poland. The story, told with a mix of humour and heartbreak, explores themes of resilience, hope, and the impact of the Holocaust on children.
The novel deals with sensitive and emotional themes, including war, persecution, and the Holocaust, seen through the eyes of a child. Although it is written for younger readers, it contains confronting ideas. You may wish to be prepared to discuss these issues at home if your child brings them up. If your child asks questions about the Holocaust or World War II, you may consider answering honestly but at a level appropriate for their age. You don’t need to go into graphic detail – focus on kindness, courage, and why it’s important to remember history. This will be the focus at school. The story is also about friendship, hope, bravery and love and these positive messages will be highlighted during class discussions.
If your child seems upset or anxious during reading, please let Mrs Traynor know.
