News from Year Three

Welcome back!
Welcome back to Term 3! At the end of last term, the Year 3s set some goals for their learning, and we will work towards them over the next 9 weeks. This will be a busy term with production, and I'm sure it will fly by! We have made a fantastic start to our learning this week... using our Big Brains right from the word go!
Speaking of production... I will reshare the costume information from Ms Bourke:
Costumes
Mrs Vranken and a small team have been busy sourcing and making the Grade 5/6 character costumes. We still require some help with this - if you are interested, please let us know!
Traditionally, we ask parents to provide the 'base clothing' for our F-4 costumes. Below is an outline of what items we would like you to provide for your F-4 child. Costumes are due at school by Monday 28th July (Week 2) so please gather them over the holidays. Please send these items to school in a clearly named bag. These will be kept at school to use for dress rehearsals and will be taken home prior to the production. Thank you to all the parents who have already sent these in!
3/4 Zoo Guests and Foosa
Parents to provide:
~ plain bright ‘everyday’ clothes - no patterns, brand names, logos, etc. (Preferably easily pulled off without zips, etc, as it is a quick change out of this costume. These will not be damaged or altered and students will “get them back” at the end of Production.
~ black pants or leggings
~ black long-sleeve top
~ black fingerless gloves
The black items will have things glued onto them, so new is not expected!
At the end of Production, students can keep this costume or donate it to the school. The school will provide the additional parts of the costume.
Telling the Time!
It would be fantastic if you could ask your child to tell the time for you... We have been learning about 'quarter past' and 'quarter to' this week on analogue clocks, and it can be a tricky concept to master. Lots of real-life practice helps!
The Iron Man
We have begun to read The Iron Man by Ted Hughes during English, and this will last the whole term. Some exciting vocab words we have come across are brink, awkward, darted and enormous.
The Year 3s have also begun Paired Reading (reading with a partner focusing on fluency), which will continue until the end of the year.
Maria Ruberto Next Week
The second parent session with Maria Ruberto will take place next Tuesday 29th July at 5pm at St Brigid’s, Healesville.
Maria’s presentations are free for all St Joseph’s and St Brigid’s families and offer valuable insights into supporting your child’s resilience, mental health, and overall wellbeing.
If you missed the first session last term, don’t worry, this session is still relevant and open to all. We’d love to see as many families as possible take advantage of this fantastic opportunity.
Free childcare will be available on the night, provided by staff from both schools, and a light snack will be offered to the children while you attend the session.
The final session with Maria will occur in Term 4 on October 14 at St Joseph’s.
Inquiry in Term 3
This term our Inquiry unit is "Frame by Frame": Students will practice thinking creatively as they explore different ways to tell stories and develop a stop-motion animation. They will create a simple story and learn how to use a storyboard. Students will build a character and a set for their stop-motion animation and practice photographing and editing an animation using the Stop-Motion Studio Application.
We hope to have another exhibition at the end of term where parents and family will be invited to view the students' stop-motion animations. Stay tuned!
