Learning News Week 4, Term 3 2025

Learning News

Our focus in Mathematics across the school for the first 3 weeks of Term 3 was Multiplicative Relations. In our Infants classes, students were building essential skills by forming groups and dividing larger collections into equal groups. They were also skip counting and exploring arrays to visually understand multiplication concepts. This foundational work seamlessly flows into our Primary classes, where students have been building on these skills to explore a range of multiplication and division strategies. They're not just finding answers, but learning to identify the most efficient strategy for different problems, developing a flexible and strategic approach to mathematics.

K/1

Our mathematicians in K/1 have been hard at work! They've had so much fun learning about making groups and understanding how to count and sort objects. This hands-on approach has built a great foundation for their next big adventure: exploring area! We are now using hands-on activities to introduce the idea of area as the space a shape covers. The kids will be using a variety of objects, like small cubes and paper squares, to cover different surfaces in the classroom. This playful method allows them to see and feel how we measure area, making this abstract concept tangible and exciting!

Year 1

This fortnight, Year One students have been exploring the concept of area in a hands-on and creative way! They have been using a variety of different materials, from building blocks to playing cards, to measure the area of different shapes and objects. The children have been enthusiastically engaged in this fun and practical approach to learning, and their work shows a fantastic understanding of this important mathematical concept. Well done, Year One!

Year 2

We've had a fantastic fortnight in Year 2 as we've been diving into the world of area in mathematics! The students have been busy becoming experts at measuring the space inside two-dimensional shapes. Using square units, they've been counting how many squares it takes to completely cover a shape, whether it's a rectangle, a square, or another interesting shape. This hands-on approach helps them understand what area really is and gives them a practical way to compare the size of different objects. It's been wonderful to see their problem-solving skills shine as they work out the area of various shapes.

Year 3 & 4

In Year 4, students learned about 3D shapes beyond just their names. They identified and described the properties of common objects like cubes, cylinders and spheres by counting their faces (flat surfaces), edges (where two faces meet) and vertices (corners). A key focus was also on understanding the difference between prisms and pyramids. They discovered that a prism had two identical ends and rectangular faces connecting them, while a pyramid had only one base with triangular faces that met at a single point at the top. They also learned to sketch these shapes and draw them from a top, side, and front view, which helped them understand how a 3D object could be represented in 2D.
