PDHPE

Welcome to PDHPE for Term 3 at Mater Dei. Staff have prepared well over the holidays and are looking forward to another rewarding term.

Year 7 are continuing to develop their Cheerleading routines for the first 3 weeks of Term 3. Routines are being developed in small groups and combine dance and gymnastic skills that were taught at the end of Term 2. We look forward to seeing students work together to create some amazing routines. From week 4, students can expect to participate in Netball, Basketball and European Handball. Inside the classroom, Year 7 have started working through a unit that focuses on Healthy Food Choices which will further develop their understanding of health and how food choices can influence their overall wellbeing.

Year 8 have recently started investigating the unit “Be Smart, Don’t Start”. Throughout this term students will recognise the health implications associated with issues such as Vaping, Drug and Alcohol use. Students will empower themselves with information and protective strategies to minimise harm. These issues are extremely relevant as students move through adolescence and we encourage you to view and read through your child’s work during this time.

In practical lessons, students will be participating in Newcomb ball, Volleyball and Mini Tennis.

Year 9 PDHPE will participate in League Tag and AFL during Term 3. They will participate in a range of matches and small sided activities, whilst learning new skills with our games sense approach to learning.

In the classroom, students have begun a new unit called ‘Protecting Myself: Sexual Health’. Within this unit, students will examine attitudes and behaviours to effectively promote health, safety and wellbeing relevant to this stage in their lives. They will also develop and apply self-management skills to effectively manage complex situations.

Year 10 students will be involved in a thought-provoking unit based on peer and social influences. The lessons are designed to help students understand how their peers and social expectations can influence their decision making and overall health. There will be a particular focus on driving and technology use.

In practical lessons, students will be participating in a Sofcrosse unit for the first 4 weeks. Following this, students plan and choreograph a cultural dance inspired by a chosen culture from around the world.

Child Studies

This term the Year 9 Child Studies students will be completing a unit called ‘Caring for a Child’. This will involve lots of practical experience in swaddling, bathing and nappy changing. Further on this, students will be taking home and caring for a virtual baby overnight. This is a valuable experience and a great way to understand the challenges of caring for a newborn child.

Last term, Year 10 Child Studies students enjoyed a unit that focused on adequate nutrition for babies and young children. Students enjoyed planning a ‘birthday party’ which included preparing healthy party food and decorating birthday cakes. There were lots of amazing creations! This term students further develop their understanding of how technology can impact young children.
