Mathematics

Hello VPS families, and welcome to the Numeracy section of the Nurlendi News! This is where we’ll share exciting resources, fun games, and practical ideas and updates you can enjoy at home with your children to support their mathematical learning.

Maths Curriculum Day - Wednesday, August 13

On Wednesday, our teachers participated in a full-day professional learning workshop with Anna Kapnoullas from TopTen Mathematics, focusing on Multiplicative Thinking. They explored practical, hands-on strategies for teaching multiplication and division—progressing from early concepts like repeated addition and skip-counting to more advanced skills such as multi-digit multiplication, multiplying decimals, and division techniques. This training has equipped our staff with fresh approaches to designing engaging lessons that build problem-solving skills and boost mathematical confidence in every student.

Helping Your Child with Maths at Home

Supporting your child’s Maths learning doesn’t have to mean working through worksheets. You can help build confidence by making Maths part of everyday life.

  • Measure ingredients, work out change, estimate travel times, or compare prices.
  • Encourage your child to explain their thinking, not just give the answer.
  • Use real-world problems to make Maths meaningful and fun.
  • Keep Maths positive, praise effort and persistence.
  • Remind them that mistakes help us learn.
