Book Week – Book an Adventure

Book Week is coming up! Our Book Week Parade will be held on Monday 18th August. The theme this year is Book an Adventure. Students are encouraged to come dressed as their favourite book character. We encourage creativity and the use of items from around the house or recycled materials to make costumes. We can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Author Visit

On Thursday 21st August, we will welcome Mark Wilson, an award-winning author and illustrator, to speak with students about reading, writing, and the inspiration behind his stories. Mark has won numerous awards, including ten CBCA Awards, four Wilderness Society Awards, the C.J. Picture Book International Award (3rd place), and the 2011 Dromkeen Medal for Services to Children’s Literature. Most recently, he won the 2023 CBCA Award for Votes for Women! The Story of Nellie, Rose and Mary.

Page-Turners in Peculiar Places

This year we’ve decided to hold a creative reading challenge called Page-Turners in Peculiar Places! The idea is simple: students, with the support of parents, are invited to film themselves reading in an unexpected, imaginative or curious location. The main purpose of this challenge is to promote reading in a fun and memorable way. We encourage students to think creatively! They may even like to choose a location that connects cleverly to the book they’re reading. Here are some examples:

  • Reading Specky Magee at the MCG during a footy game
  • Reading The Magic Faraway Tree in a treehouse
  • Reading One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish near an aquarium or swimming pool

For this activity, the video needs to be less than 30 seconds and can you please ensure that the locations are safe and age-appropriate. Email the video to john.hoskin@education.vic.gov.au by Monday 18th August, the day of the Book Week Parade.

After the videos have been submitted, they will be shared in classrooms during Book Week. To access an example video, please click on the link https://drive.google.com/file/d/17SE_wCCs-9aHhNA8eX5c0uzWEc7C0VeH/view?usp=sharing

The Great VPS Book Swap!

We’re also running a school-wide book swap. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to refresh their home libraries and share some previously loved books with others. Students are asked to bring in a book by Tuesday 19th August. Please ensure the book your child brings is something that is in good condition and suitable for their age group. Also make sure they are ready to part with the book. At the end of the week, students will be invited to choose a different book to take home. This will be done during school time and the collection will be organised by the classroom teacher.

Parent Book Swap

We are inviting parents and carers to join the fun too! We will be running a separate Parent Book Swap during Book Week. If you have a book or two you’ve finished and would like to pass on, please drop them off at the school library or send them in with your child before Tuesday 19th August. We welcome books from different languages and of different genres and styles. We are limiting everyone to 2 books so that we are not inundated with too many.

On the afternoon of Friday 22nd August, parents who have contributed a book will be invited to come to the front of the school, outside the office, to select a new one to read. Along with the opportunity to swap over a book, the Community Network will be running an afternoon tea 'Sip and Chat' from 2:30 until 3:15pm for all parents. Whilst the afternoon tea finishes at 3:15pm, the Book Swap will be open till 4pm.  We hope to see you there!

MS Readathon

This year, Vermont Primary School is proud to be participating in the MS Readathon, a fundraiser that has been supporting people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) for 45 years. The MS Readathon combines the joy of reading with the mission of making a difference in the lives of those affected by MS. The event runs for the entire month of August.
