We are looking forward to Book Week next week and the extra activities that we will get to do, including dressing up and sharing our favourite books and characters. Book Week is next week!

Our Book Week Parade will be held on Monday 18th August and we look forward to seeing which favourite book characters will make an appearance at school for the day. We also look forward to hearing award-winning author and illustrator Mark Wilson share his experiences with us on Thursday 21st August.

ICAS Competition

We have now completed two of the ICAS competitions, and have two remaining. They will be run in the following weeks:

Week 5 - Spelling

Week 6 - Maths

Forces in Motion:

We are excited to have our 'Forces in Motion' incursion coming up soon. Students have been enjoying learning about forces in the classroom, and this incursion will help to consolidate their understandings. Payment and permission is due by Monday 25th August via the Compass portal. This week, students looked at the ways in which forces are evident in sports and created posters to show and compare these.

In the Classroom:

Literacy:

This week we have continued to discuss figurative language as a way of describing things in interesting ways. We learnt about metaphors and how they compare two things by saying that something is another thing. Here are some student examples:

Tell us that someone is not well-behaved:

She is a devil.

He is a monkey.

He is a little demon.

Tell us someone is smart:

He is a walking calculator.

He is a big brain.

She is a wise owl.

Describe a tree using a metaphor:

The tree was a sturdy stone pillar.

The tree is a wooden skyscraper.

Writing:

We have been focussing on the trait of 'Word Choice' in our Writing lessons recently. Students have been discussing how to use interesting vocabulary in their writing, as well as trying to include similes and metaphors too. This week we examined some poems and discussed the words used, specifically looking for sensory or expressive language. Students experimented writing their own poems and here are just a few of their amazing pieces:

Maths:

We have now wrapped up our unit of work on Fractions where we have focussed on modelling, adding (same denominator) and equivalence. Here are some examples of our book work looking at equivalent fractions:

We have now switched our focus to Division, looking at equal groups and remainders, and also began a mapping lesson creating our own treasure maps. This will be continued next week and we can show you the end result in our next newsletter.
