Year Two

Spotlight on Learning

Damascus Community

Dear Families,

What a fantastic week it has been in Year 2. Excitement was in the air as students proudly showed off their colourful shoes and socks for Crazy Sock and Shoe Day - it certainly brought lots of fun to our community! We have also kicked off our swimming lessons this week, and the students have taken to the water with great enthusiasm and growing confidence. It's been wonderful to see the students embracing new challenges and enjoying these special experiences together.

This week we have been learning about...

Religious Education:   Students have been learning about sacraments within the Catholic Church with a particular focus on the first sacrament of initiation - Baptism.

Mathematics:  Students continued learning about multiplication and division.  We focused on learning how multiplication can be represented by 'groups of' and 'multiplied by', using thinkboards to represent multiplication problems in different ways, representing grouping as repeated subtraction, and representing sharing and grouping using arrays.

English: Students have enjoyed reading and unpacking different language features in the picture book 'Jabari Jumps'. Students have been writing sentences about Jabari's character traits, and how Jabari faced his challenge of jumping off the diving board and what he did it overcome it. We have been learning how to start sentences with subordinating conjunctions - if, when, before, after, although, even though. For our decoding and spelling focus, we have continued learning about Open Syllables.

Integrated Studies:  Students explored how different communities celebrate stages of development, including an Indigenous Welcome Baby to Country ceremony and the Djirri Djirri Coming of Age ceremony.

AUSLAN:  Students learnt that in Auslan we sign the time at the start of a sentence. Signing the time first helps to establish the context of what you are signing about. The signs we learnt this week included:

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR:  Students participated in learning on the topic of Gender Norms and Stereotypes.  Students participated in activities that demonstrated how the rules of a game help people to play in a fair way.  Students also learnt how being unfair can lead to people getting hurt or upset.

Next week we are learning about...

Religious Education: Students will continue to learn about the first sacrament of initiation - Baptism.

Mathematics: Students will continue learning about multiplication and division.  Our focus will be on solving problems using sharing, solving division problems using equal grouping, and solving division problems using partitioning.

English: Students will unpack different language features using the picture book 'Salat in Secret'. We will learn to identify nouns and adjectives in sentences, and to select adjectives to modify nouns in a sentence. For our decoding and spelling focus, we will continue to learn about Open Syllables.

Auslan:  Students will reflect on and consolidate their learning of Auslan signs from this term. Students will participate in learning activities that allow them to practise using the signs learnt over the past three weeks.

Integrated Studies: Students will learn about celebrations of stages of development in different communities.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR: Students will continue learning on the topic of Gender Norms and Stereotypes.  Students will participate in activities to learn that it is not helpful to apply labels to people.
