Year Three

 Spotlight on Learning

Ephesus Community

Dear Families,

A big thank you for all the generous donations to the Opening the Doors Foundation. It was a joy to see students proudly wearing their crazy, fun, and colourful shoes and socks to support such a meaningful cause. We’re proud to share that the St Thomas community raised $485—what a fantastic effort!

Congratulations to the following learners and to Kalen from 3D!

Religious Education

In Religious Education, students have been exploring how Baptism marks the beginning of our faith journey and what it means personally to each of us. We also learned about Mary MacKillop and how she lived her faith through kindness, courage, and service. Her example inspires us to follow Jesus in our everyday actions. In addition, we have been learning about the seven sacraments and how they help us grow closer to God. Students reflected on how the sacraments are a special part of our journey in faith.

Maths

In Maths, we are learning how to add and subtract two-digit numbers and solve problems with money. Students are using helpful strategies like jump, partitioning, and compensation. They are also using number lines and bar models to show how they solved a problem. This helps them become more confident and understand how to use maths in real life.

English

This week in writing, students have been learning how to expand their sentences using adverbials—words or phrases that add extra detail. We explored three main types: adverbials of place (e.g. in the garden), time (e.g. after lunch), and manner (e.g. with great care). These help answer where, when, and how something happens in a sentence. By using adverbials, students are becoming more confident and descriptive writers!

Grade 3’s are developing structured body paragraphs that include a clear topic sentence, three supporting details, and a concluding statement. This approach helps students organise their ideas logically and communicate information effectively in their writing.

AUSLAN

In Auslan, students are learning that different languages have different rules. For example, in Auslan we show time (like ‘yesterday’ or ‘two days ago’) at the start of the sentence, and we don’t use past tense endings like ‘-ed’ in English words such as ‘played’. Students practised comparing English and Auslan sentences and can describe one difference between how the two languages work.

Social/Emotional Learning (SEL) & Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships and Building Respectful Relationships (RRRR)

In Health, students are learning how we sometimes copy what we see others do. We discussed how people can learn behaviours by watching those around them. Students also explored the idea of gender and how some behaviours are influenced by what people expect boys and girls to do. We looked at examples of gender stereotypes in books, TV shows, and movies made for children. These lessons help students think about fairness, respect, and being true to themselves.

Integrated Learning

Students have been learning how to make healthy food choices to help their bodies grow strong. We explored the difference between everyday foods and sometimes foods, and discussed why balance is important. Students practised swapping less healthy snacks for better options and explained how these choices support their wellbeing.
