Year One

Spotlight on Learning

Jerusalem Community

Dear Families,

A warm welcome to Cathy Song and Amy Richardson to the Jerusalem community! Amy will teach 1A on a Wednesday and Cathy will teach 1B on  Thursday and Friday.

Thank you to the parents who have reached out with an offer to volunteer! We will send out more information soon. We would love to have a few more parent volunteers to join us for the day. Along with our Child Safety Policy, all parent volunteers are required to hold a Working with Children Check (free to apply online for volunteers) and to have completed the induction with our office (takes approximately 30 minutes).

If interested please contact your child's classroom teacher to express your interest. Thank you!

Religious Education Focus:

This week in Religion, the children celebrated the life of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, whose feast day is on the 8th of August. They learnt that she was Australia’s very first Saint and were given the opportunity to paint a portrait of her. The children also explored the beautiful message that we are all made in God’s image and wonderfully are unique just like our fingerprints! Even zebras don’t share the same stripes, but God loves each of us just as we are.

English focus:

We are reading "Eat a Balanced Diet" which is about making healthy food choices. Students learnt about the different food groups and how they can contribute to the growth of various parts of the body. Facts they learnt are why carrots are good for eye health and that calcium in dairy help our bones grow.  They also made links from the book to our inquiry question "Fuel for the Journey".

Mathematics focus: This week we learnt about sorting objects in to groups and arranging them in to arrays. Then we skip counted in 2s, 5's and 10s to understand Divisive/Multiplicative concepts.

Task to do at home:

SEL: This week we learned about 'Unhelpful labels' and the importance of viewing the whole person and all the things people can enjoy doing.

Integrated Curriculum: Personal, Social and Community Health

This week we have learnt about identifying the different food groups in our weekly shopping basket. We used supermarket catalogues to choose foods that make us Go, Glow and Grow. We also started a science experiment to observe the changes between a store bought burgher from a fast food chain and a fresh ingredient. We will report back on our findings soon!

Please send back the interview sheets along with your child's baby photo, if you hven't already done so.

This week we learnt the signs:

Ways to engage with the newsletter:

  • Read or watch the weekly book with your child at home (there is often a read aloud on you tube). Talk about what the book's most important ideas are.

  • Ask your child to retell the story using their own words.

  • Talk about who the characters are, where the story is happening.

  • Use the spelling words provided to make up sentences at home or simply have a 5 word mini dictation.

  • Take the idea around Mathematics and ask students to repeat an activity they did at school, with you.

    Reminders

  • Please ensure students have a jumper or sports jackets for outside play for Term 3.

  • In preparation for our learning, can we please ask families to provide a baby photo for each student (if you haven't already done so). You can e-mail or send a printed copy to their own classroom teacher.

  • A change of clothes to be placed in each child's bag (including socks, underwear or tights) in case of an accident.

  • Comprehension questions to ask based on the take home text:
    "Point to where it shows...."
    “I wonder why…”
    "what makes you think...."
    “This reminds me of…”
    "Show me where it says"
“I didn’t understand that part, so I’ll reread it.”
Use a mix of Who, What, When, Where, Why, How questions based on the book.
