5/6 CLASSROOM

Welcome to Term 3!

We’re excited to begin another fantastic term of learning and growth in Grade 5/6. We’re looking forward to new challenges, engaging experiences, and continued success together. Let’s make Term 3 a great one!

English:

This term, our class is diving into the novel Tom Appleby: Convict Boy by Jackie French. The story follows young Tom, a chimney sweep in England, who finds himself deported to Botany Bay as part of the First Fleet. With themes of resilience, friendship, and starting anew, the book offers rich learning opportunities as we explore life in early colonial Australia. Our literacy focus will include both text-level and sentence-level writing. Students will work on developing their writing structure, punctuation, and fluency, while also building deeper reading comprehension skills. This text provides a strong foundation for critical thinking, historical connections, and creative responses throughout the term.

Maths:

This term in Mathematics, our focus is on developing a solid understanding of fractions. Students will learn to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator, then progress to working with related and unrelated denominators. They will also explore how to find and use equivalent fractions to support their calculations. As we move through the unit, students will apply these skills to more complex problems, including adding and subtracting mixed numerals. Alongside written strategies, we’ll use visual models and hands-on materials to strengthen conceptual understanding. These foundational fraction skills are important for building confidence and accuracy in mathematical thinking and will support future learning across all strands of mathematics.

Swimming Program – Week 3

This week, our students are taking part in the Swimming Program at Aquamoves. It’s been a fun and active week filled with new challenges in the pool. While there have been some tired faces by the end of each day, students are building confidence and learning important water safety skills that will support them in and around water.

Reading at Home

We’re thrilled to see so many students enjoying reading at home each night! Just a friendly reminder to please write what you read in your diary. Reading material can come from anywhere — books, comics, magazines, or even instructions and recipes. The goal is to make reading a fun and regular part of every day. Keep up the great work and happy reading!

Learning Conversations (Week Three):

Learning Conversations will take place on Monday 4th August (3:30pm – 4:30pm) and Tuesday 5th August (2:30pm – 4:30pm). Bookings are now open and can be made through PAM. This is a wonderful opportunity to have a chat with your child’s teacher about their progress, celebrate achievements, and discuss any questions or goals. We look forward to connecting with you!

Wishing all families a wonderful week ahead! Here’s to lots of learning, fun moments, and quality time together. Thank you for the ongoing support — it truly makes a difference. Let’s make this week a great one for our students!
