Visual Arts

Last week in Visual Arts, all students were busy creating Mother’s Day and Special Person’s Day gifts filled with love and creativity. Each year level worked on a unique art project to celebrate the important people in their lives: Foundation students made colourful painted hearts using vibrant paint daubers. Year 1/2 students created cheerful Flower Wall Hangings full of bright colours and beautiful drawings. Year 3/4 students crafted textured β€œFlowers in a Vase” collages, combining layers and materials to create a stunning piece. Year 5/6 students made heartfelt 3D tissue paper hearts, carefully shaping and layering the tissue paper to bring their creations to life. Students were so proud of their handmade gifts, and it was beautiful to see the effort, thought, and care they put into creating something special for the people they love. We hope all our amazing mums and special people had a wonderful day!

Also, this week Year 3/4 students were able to finally complete theirΒ interactive "flip and show" colour wheel from last Term.Β Β

Culture Studies

This week in Culture Studies, students were introduced to the vibrant and energetic culture of Brazil. We began by learning about Brazil’s population, language, and location on the world map. A special thank you goes to Luca from Year 6, who is Brazilian and fluent in Portuguese. Luca generously shared his knowledge with all grades and taught everyone some key Portuguese words such as yes, no, hello, goodbye, how are you, thank you, dance, and house. Thank you so much, Luca, for giving up your time to teach us! Our focus was on the celebrations and festivals that make Brazilian culture so colourful and joyful. Students had a great time learning basic samba dance steps, with a big shoutout to Adian and Oliver from Year 5/6 for their incredible enthusiasm and leadership in helping guide their peers through the dance moves. To extend the celebration, students created their own Brazilian festival outfits: Foundation and Year 1/2 students decorated cardboard cut-out person templates using fabric, glitter stickers, pom poms, glitter pipe cleaners, and feathers. Year 5/6 students designed costumes by decorating wooden armatures with the same vibrant materials. It was a fantastic week filled with rhythm, creativity, and cultural appreciation as we brought the spirit of Brazil to life at LePage!

PEΒ

During the last two weeks of PE, students in all year levels have been participating in Gymnastics. Students have learnt some important formations such as the tuck position, landing safely when falling, motorbike landings, angry cats, seal, downward dogs, front and back supports. These formations are really important during the PE classes, but also important for stretching our bodies and being flexible.

The emphasis in PE has been on having strong bodies, both arms and legs, as well as strong stomach muscles. These parts of our bodies are extremely important for everyday activities, including walking, running and sitting straight.

Students do a warm up which includes stretching and a fun game before they move into different rotations which includes β€˜bunny hops’ over a platform, side and forward rolls, hand stands, jumping / leaping, hopping, skipping, crawling, pushing and pulling.

Gymnastics is a fun and dynamic program and all students love the opportunity to explore how their bodies move. They also are active the whole time ending up being very warm / hot at the end, which is great for their overall health.

Interschool Sports

We have now completed two weeks of interschool sports. Week 2 we played against Stella Maris and in week 3 we played against Cheltenham PS. Against Stella Maris we only had 5 and 6 students playing, but against Cheltenham, we needed some extra numbers from our grade 4 girls to help with our girls softball team.

Against Stella Maris, we had a great day of competition. The mixed netballers had a good win, the mixed softballers had a very narrow loss and our soccer and girls netballer went down, but tried very hard.

Against Cheltenham the competition was great once again and we had some strong performances. The girls softball and both mixed and girls netball teams won. The mixed softball again had a close loss and the mixed soccer team improved from the week before but went down.

The focus of these competitions is not about winning and losing, but more about the socialisation among the students and being active. It has been a real highlight to see all of our students try their very best, and also show great team work, encouragement and sportsmanship both between themselves but also the opposing schools teams.

Well done everyone and keep it up.Β

Kingston District Cross CountryΒ

Last week we sent 21 of our students to the District Cross Country to run against approximately 10 schools in the area.

In each event there was between 60-80 runners, so it was going to be a hard competition. The top 10 placegetters from each event move through to the next round which is the Division.

Our small team showed great determination and wonderful support and encouragement of each other and other runners. They all tried really hard.

We had some very good results with three runners finishing in the top 10 and advancing.

Luke M, year 6, was noticeably impacted as he returned from Bali the day before and wasn’t feeling his best. Under duress he pushed to the very end and finished 10th. I think he will run much better at the division competition.Β

Lara B, year 6, also ran very well and pushed all the way to the end. She too finished 10th, and is our first girl to move through to Division.

Sebastian A, Β year 5, ran as hard as he could and was the schools highest place getter finishing 9th.Β

Well done to these three runners and we wish them well for the competition at Division. All of our other runners did their best and we are proud of their efforts. Well done.

Auslan. Week Four. Term Two

The students have been learning how to sign numbers 1-20. The grade 3-6s have also been learning the signs for maths operations. These include addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.Β

We have been playing games incorporating Auslan sign language. The students played number bingo and Auslan fruit salad on the oval. This was lots of fun! Each class attempts to use sign language to solve the daily wordle for kids. This can be quite challenging but we usually manage to solve it each session.Β

Our little prep students are doing so well learning the Auslan alphabet.

It has been a fun two weeks, with positive learning in Auslan.Β

Following this program, students will be encouraged to take up private or group lessons in one of these instruments within the instrumental program at the school.

Parts of the program will be photographed and filmed and all students are to fill in a survey.
