CHILD SAFETY & WELLBEING AT MILGATE PRIMARY SCHOOL

Information for families and the school community

Milgate Primary School is committed to providing an environment where students are safe and feel safe.

Our child safety framework on our website explains how we support and maintain child safety and wellbeing at Milgate Primary School. It includes our:

  • Child Safety and Wellbeing Policy
  • Child Safety Reporting and Responding Obligations Procedures, and
  • Child Safety Code of Conduct, which outlines acceptable and unacceptable behaviours for all staff and volunteers at our school.
  • Bullying Prevention Policy
  • Student Wellbeing and Engagement Policy

Our students and families are important partners in providing a child safe environment. These regular newsletter reminders are one of the ways we ensure our school community is aware of:

-     our commitment to child safety, and

-     how to provide feedback or raise child safety concerns.

If you have any concerns about child safety at any time, please contact Kate Mancarella on 9842 7744. Any child safety complaints or concerns are treated seriously. For more information about our school’s complaints process, see our Complaints Policy

We also welcome your ideas on ways we can improve our approach to child safety and wellbeing. If you have any suggestions or comments please contact Kate Mancarella on 9842 774

THE IMPORTANCE OF REGULAR ATTENDANCE

Did you know that if a student misses just one day of school every two weeks, it adds up to four full weeks of missed learning over the year? Every day at school counts. Regular attendance is vital for students to build strong foundations in literacy and numeracy, stay connected with peers, and engage in meaningful learning experiences. Being at school every day helps students feel part of the community, keeps learning consistent, and supports their overall success.

PEER MEDIATION

Some of our Year 6 students have been participating in the new Peer Mediation program where they develop conflict resolution skills and build positive relationships across the school. Each lunch time, armed with a high-vis vest and a first aid kit, our Year 6 Peer Mediators support their younger peers in managing small problems or conflicts within the school yard.

This week, after analysing some data, our Peer Mediators gathered throughout Term 1, three of our Wellbeing Leaders participated in Foundation year level collaborative planning. They provided some valuable insight into the types of problems or conflicts our Foundation students might be experiencing, and made recommendations as to what skills they may need support in developing, as well as possible strategies for developing these skills. Well done, Year 6 Peer Mediators, and thank you for all of your amazing effort!

MILGATE SCHOOL LEADERS PAY TRIBUTE AT ANZAC DAY SERVICE

On Tuesday, our six School Leaders proudly represented Milgate Primary School at the annual ANZAC Day Service, hosted by the Rotary Club of Manningham City. As part of the ceremony, our students laid a wreath to pay their respects and honour the service and sacrifice of the ANZACs. It was a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the importance of remembrance, and our students represented our school with maturity and respect throughout the event.

SUPPORTING STUDENT SAFETY: PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PROFESSIONAL WITH DAN PETRO

Today, seven teachers, our three Principals, Wellbeing Leader, and therapy dog handler took part in a full-day professional learning session with Behaviour Analyst Dan Petro. The session focused on deepening our understanding of how to effectively support students who display Behaviours of Concern (BOC), with a focus on proactive and student-centred strategies.

When students display serious Behaviours of Concern, educators often try a range of responses to maintain safety. However, these approaches can fall short when the focus is on controlling the child rather than helping the student manage themselves.

During this workshop, participants were guided through the development of clear and effective support plans aimed at both preventing BOC situations and responding safely when they occur. The session also covered key strategies for managing crisis situations and creating a safe, supportive environment for all.

FOUNDATION | INCURSION - Fairytale

This week the Foundation students explored storytelling through acting and using their imagination with an incursion from the Drama Toolbox. They experimented with sound, actions and speech to help fix Fairytale Land, where everything was upside down! Dressing up in costumes and following the sequence of storytelling, the students enjoyed the day. Well done Foundation students on being risk-takers and using your communication skills to tell the story!
